LEADER KILLED

ILL-FATED EXPEDITION OVERWHELMED BY AVALANCHE SIMLA, June 22. (Received June 23, at 5.5 p.m.) Herr Wien, the leader of the German -expedition which set out to climb Nanga Parbat, in the Himalaya Mountains, perished with other members of the expedition who were overwhelmed by an avalanche. The sole survivor is Dr Ulrich Luft, of Munich, who telegraphed from Gilgit that he was safe and well, and was not involved in the disaster. Details of the disaster are still awaited from Major Kirkbridge, British political agent at Gilgit, who went to the spot after telegraphing the first news.

A previous message stated: An avalanche overwhelmed the German Nanga Parbat expedition, killing seven climbers and nine Gurkha porters, but the leader (Herr Wien) escaped.
