The University paid the same rent for these grounds as was paid by any other sports body for similar grounds, and an account had already been received from the City Council for the fees for this year. A similar account was received last year and was duly paid. The Mayor had stated that this was the second year in succession that the University had applied for grounds in the middle of the season, but Mr Mead said that last year, the only other occasion in recent years on which the option had been exercised, the application was forwarded to the City Council in March.
As to Cr Batchelor's statement that the University sports bodies had taken grounds and later in the season intimated that they no longer required them and endeavoured to evade payment, Mr Mead said he would like Cr Batchelor to quote one occasion on which this had happened. " No doubt the next report of the Reserves Committee of the council will remove the misconceptions which apparently exist," Mr Mead concluded.
