EXTENSION OF TRADE
MR SAVAGE'S VIEWS WARMLY WELCOMED TO HULL LONDON, June 18. (Received June 19, at 6.30 p.m.) Fulfilling a promise that he made early after his arrival, the Prime Minister of New Zealand (Mr M. J. Savage), accompanied by the High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan), made his first journey out of London as the guest of the London and North Eastern Railway. He was warmly welcomed by crowds at the Hull station, some of whom shouted the Maori welcome, " Haeremai." The Lord Mayor of Hull presided at a civic luncheon at the Guildhall. Proposing the toast of " New Zealand," he said he hoped it would be possible to extend direct trade to Hull.
Mr Savage, responding, promised to investigate the possibilities of trade with Hull. New Zealanders were anxious to extend their trade to all parts of Britain, in which they would spend every shilling possible. Trade could be expanded only if the buying capacity of the people were increased, and the New Zealand legislation aimed at this objective. Mr Savage inspected the Hull docks in the afternoon before returning to London.
