COUNTRY NEWS

BALCLUTHA Rugby Football Local Rugby enthusiasts were greatly disappointed when it became Known on Saturday that the Toko First Grade team had defaulted to Clutha. The game was to have been played on the Balclutha Show Ground, which later in the afternoon was the scene of a good contest between Crescent (the premier First Grade team) and Clinton. Clinton provided a surprise by winning by 10 points in a game that was largely a forward, one. A fairly strong wind was blowing down the field, and in the first spell Crescent had the advantage of this, and endeavoured to force the pace. Sutton, T. Hughes, and Stanway loked like scoring on three occasion, but Clinton's defence was sound, and their pack of strong and fast forwards at times carried the play right to Crescent's line. In the loose rushes the Orr brothers and Nicol were very prominent. The spell closed with no score by either side. In the second spell, with the advantage of the wind, Clinton attacked strongly, and in the first few minutes only good play by Bartlett averted a score. Meggitt (Clinton) had an unsuccessful shot at goal for an infringement by Crescent, and after some give-and-take play Clinton was awarded a penalty kick in a good position, and Wilson kicked a goal. (3—nil.) From a loose rush Meggitt cut in and went across to score. Wilson converted nicely. (B—nil.) W. Hughes (Cresent full-back) showed up with a good run and kick into touch, but Clinton forwards brought the ball back, and took play right to the line, which A. Orr crossed to score. Wilson converted. 03 —nil.) Crescent rallied and took play to Clinton's line, but failed to score. Lory (Clinton full-back) was very prominent in repelling Crescent attacks. T. Hughes then headed a dribbling rush, and R. Hughes went over to score. Stanway's kick at goal missed. Shortly after the game ended with the score:—Clinton 13 points, Crescent 3 points. Mr C. G. Clark was the referee.

In the Third Grade match which served as a " curtain-raiser" to the senior game, High School defeated Toko 111. Toko had the wind in its favour in the first spell, but could not score. In the second spell School attacked throughout. Scores for School were made by Parr (a penalty goal). Floyd (a try which Parr converted), Allan (two tries, one of which was converted), Guest (a try), and Pearson (two tries). The final score was:— School 25 points. Toko nil. Mr A. Gavvn rei'creed. The Fourth Grade same resulted in a draw:—Clutha 3. Crescent 3. On the Sports Ground. Crescent IH defeated Clutha 111 by 9 points to 3 points. PALMERSTON Rugby Football Seacliff met the Palmerston Seniors on the Show Grounds at Palmerston on Saturday. The game resolved itself into a hard forward struggle, and the plav of the backs failed to brighten up the exhibition. Seacliff won by 3 points to nil, a penalty goal, kicked by Barber. This score was a fair indication of the merits of the teams. The addition of Ivan Agnew, an ex-Southland representative forward, heartened the Palmerston pack. He effectively filled a position vacant through P. O'Reilly being injured some weeks ago. For Seacliff, Barber played an excellent game, his anticipation being a saving factor to his side. Gaffney and T. Lonie both played well. For Palmerston those prominent were Clearwater. L. M'Gregor, Cameron and Agnew. By this win Seacliff placed itself well in the running for the banner. The game was ably controlled by Mr G. Thomson.

Dunback, the leading team in the comnetition, had no difficulty in disposing of Watea. Watea fielded a weakened team, due to injuries. The final score was Dunback 20 points. Watea 5 points. For Dunback. Gunn and Roberts were outstanding, and Watea's best players were Ross and Rehu. Mr C. Olsen was referee. Palmerston Juniors won by default from Merton. WAIMATE Huimai Wins Competition Huimai won the senior Rugby competition for the second year in succession on Saturday by defeating Southern by 23 points to 7. Huimai was the better team on the day, but its superiority was not as marked as the scores would indicate. The game was played at a hectic pace with the Southern forwards, in the opening stages, playing dashingly in the loose. The solid team work of the Huimai pack and the speedy and confident handling of the backs turned the scales in Huimai's favour. Huimai's tries were scored by John Flynn, S. Hay, J. Bartlett, and R. Bartlett. R. Lundy converted all four tries and kicked a penalty goal. G. Wright scored for Southern, and A. Forbes kicked a clever field goal. Mr S. Fleming was referee.
