THE "ARREST” OF LUGGERS PATROL VESSEL JEERED AT DARWIN, June 18. A surprising new version of the arrest by the Larrakia of the Japanese pearling luggers was given to-day by Mr Chris. Bell, an injured deck hand of the Larrakia, who had flown to Darwin. Mr Bell declares chat the captain of the Larrakia was ordered off by the New Guinea Maru, which then started its engines and steamed off. A big fleet of pearlers treated the Larrakia with derision when she sailed in amongst them at Baucaut Bay. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CANBERRA, June 18. A scheme for national unemployment insurance in Australia is contained in the report of Mr G. H. Ince (chief insurance officer to the British Ministry of Labour), which was laid on the table of the House of Representatives. The report suggests that the scheme could be financed by contributions from employer, employee, and the Government on the following basis: —Ninepence per week for adult males, 8d per week for adult females and males of 18 to 21 years, and 7d per week for females of from 18 to 21.

The total annual cost to the Government will be about £2,340,000. The benefits will be 15s a week for a single man, 27s for a married man, with 4s 6d for' each child, and L3s 6d for an adult single woman. THE FREER CASE CANBERRA, June 18. (Received June 18, at 11.15 p.m.) Speaking on the Address-in-Reply in the House of Representatives today, the new Labour member for Gwydir, Mr W. J. Scully, severely criticised the Government for its “ somersault ” in regard to the exclusion and then the admission of Mrs Freer. He asked whether in all the circumstances the Government intended to compensate her for Mr Paterson’s blunder. There was no reply to Mr Scully’s question. SALE OF STUD SHEEP SYDNEY, June 18. (Received June 18, at 11.30 p.m.) At the stud sheep show to-day British breeds were offered for auction. A group of Border Leicester rams, on behalf of Mr Donald Grant, Timaru, averaged £lB 15s 3d, and an offering of 21 Southdown ewes on behalf of Mr W. O. Rennie, Canterbury, realised six guineas each. On account of Mr Joseph Brooks, Canterbury, one Southdown ram realised nine guineas, and three Southdown stud ewes five guineas each. Six Southdown stud rams, on behalf of Mr A. S. Elworthy, Timaru, averaged £l7 10s.
