IMPORTED FOOTBALLS
LOCAL MANUFACTURER’S COMPLAINT BIG DECREASE IN OUTPUT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 18. The detrimental effect of the importation of footballs from such countries as India on firms in New Zealand, which have specialised in their manufacture, has been brought under the notice of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan) by an Auckland manufacturer. The manufacturer states that his output of footballs has dropped from aoproximately 9000 last year to 2000 this season, although, fortunately, he has been able to divert his stall to other branches of leather work, primarily as the result of the demand for travelling requisites for the Coronation. There is a possibility. however, that this increased demand for other leather goods may not be sustained. The manufacturer points out that in India there is no limit on the hours of work, and workers receive small wages for their labour. He asks the Minister to take action.
