TEMUKA Plunket Society At the annual meeting of the Temuka branch of the Plunket Society on Thursday afternoon there was a very large attendance, presided over by the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan). The report and balance sheet showed that the society was in a sound financial position. Special mention was made of the highly efficient manner in which the nurse (Miss V. Brown) had Carried out her duties throughout the year, which entailed travelling over long distances. The following officers were elected for the year:—Patron, Mr T. D. BALCLUTHA Borough Council At a special meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council last night, for. the purpose of considering the estimates, it was decided to increase the consolidated rate on the unimproved value from 9id in the £ to lOd, owing to the fact that there had been an increase' in the hospital levy this year of £124. It was further decided that the sanitation rate be reduced .from 15s per service to 12s 6d. The water rate was increased from 2 per cent, to 2h per cent, of the annual value, it was estimated that the total increase made in the rates would amount to about £lls per annum.

Rugby Football The weekly meeting, held on Thursday night, of the Emergency Committee of the South Otago Sub-union (Mr J. P. Lyall in the chair), was occupied for a considerable time in considering the charges of rough play at the CUn-ton-Toko seniors match played at Milton last Saturday. Two players had been ordered off by the referee (Mi Rogers), who had reported the mattei to the sub-union. The evidence showed that Brown (Toko) had made a late tackle, and Fletcher (Clinton) in retaliation had struck him. It was decided to reprimand the two players, and to suspend them for one playing Saturday. Transfers were granted to L. G. Washington, High School to Clutha, and E. Currie, Palmerston to Toko.

EASTERN SOUTHLAND Persnal Mr J. G. Conolly. who has been accountant at the Gore branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the last 13 years, has been appointed manager or the Otautau branch in place of Mr I‘. L. Smith, who has been transferred to Raetihi. Mr G. J. Thomson, of the Invercargill branch, has been transferred to GoreRugby Sub-union The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-union, was held on Wednesday evening. The North Otago Union wrote advising that it would be unable to play a match against Eastern at Gore, owing to the fact that its team would be absent m the North Island for some time. The Southland Union advised that the annual Town v. Country match would be played at Invercargill on July 3. E R. Brown w r as granted a transfer from the Pirates Club (Dunedin) to the Albion Club.

ALEXANDRA Football Following are the positions of teams in the Vincent Rugby football competions. —— , ———— A GRADE

Drainage Scheme Work on the Alexandra borough drainage scheme is proceeding very satisfactorily, and so far no unexpected difficulties have been encountered. The work to date has cost £SOOO. and it is considered that this amount is well within the estimate. Druids’ Lodge The usual meeting of the Alexandra Lodge, No. 21, was held on Wednesday, and was presided over by Bro. G. G. Calder. The election of officers resulted as follows:—A.D.. Bro. G. G. Calder: V.A.D., Bro. A. T. Johns; treasurer, fero. W. J. Robinson: secretary, Bro. C. F. ,B. Nightingale; 1.G., Bro. N C N. Wright; 0.G., Bro. C. M. Weaver; A.D. bards, Bro. G. T. Bennie and Bro. J. Bowlers’ Social On Thursday evening members of the Alexandra Bowling Club entertained the club’s champion, Mi T. E. bunder land at a smoke concert. There was a large attendance, including visitors from the Cromwell. Clyde, and Dunedin clubs. Mr J. D. Watt (president) occupied the chair. y . The toast of “The Champion of Champions’’ was proposed by Mr J. T Davidson, secretary of the Central Otago Bowling Centre ; Mr Davidson said he had played with Mr Sunderland for many years and he was pleased to see that he had again won the championship for the centre. He had had some very heavy games with the Cromwell player, Mr H. T. Wilkinson who was well known throughout New Zealand for his bowling prowess, and to beat him was no mean achievement, Mr Davidson also congratulated the Alexandra Bowling Club for twice providing the champion. He presented Mr Sunderland with a framed certificate and also one for his club. Mr Sunderland, in reply, said ha considered it a great honour to win the championship again, and he congratulated the other players for the excellent sporting spirit in which the games had been played. Mr J. D, Watt also took the opportunity of presenting to Mr J. Gardner, winner of the Handicap Singles, and to Mr J. R. M’Kissock, winner of the colts’ competition, trophies suitably engraved. and congratulated them on their win. Messrs Gardner and M Kissopk suitably replied. Personal Mr J. S. Varcoe, Mayor of Tapanui, accompanied by Mrs Varcoe, Is at present paying a visit to Alexandra. They are the guests of Miss E. MacDonald. Mr H. Barton, Government audit inspector, is at present carrying out audit duties at the local office of the Public Works Department. Mr 1. Styche. of (he National Bank staff, Dunedin, is at present spending f portion of his annual leave in Alexandra.
