MEXICAN DEVIL WEED
WORSE PEST THAN RAGWORT '! ' SPREAD IN NORTH AUCKLAND * ~ (Feb United Press Association) WHANGAREI, June 18. Describing upatorium, the Mexican devil weed, as a worse pest than ragwort, the North Auckland Forest Society to-day passed a resolution viewing with concern the spread of the plant and drawing the attention of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Lee Martin) to the need for vigilant control measures. Mr W. M. Fraser alleged that the plant was introduced in the north in bad grass seed about 10 years ago. He traced its existence in Mexico. It reached a height of eight feet of unpenetrable growth and was not eaten by stock, If allowed to grow it would constitute a danger as it would prevent access to bushes by forming a thorny ring round the fringes.
