THE PORTOBELLO-CAPE SAUNDERS ROAD

TO. THE EDITOR

Sir.—A correspondent who subscribes himself " Resident" protests against the condition of the Fortobello-Cape Saunders road. Le,'t him •» look for the reasons.. No doubt there are lihree or four farmers who, suffer inconvenience through being amongst our pampered Government settlers who, like Oliver Twist, are always "asking for more." These men a year ago asked for the Christmas bonus to. unemployed, and received it; they get a guarantee of £4 a week, a modern house, a new school, a splendid farm stocked with the best, and paid for by the public. They pay a low rate of interest, and pocket the balance! But the point that concerns the council is this: No rates have been paid off. this property, for three years, and the ,settlers want the council to provide them with roads! My knowledge of one or two members of the council leads me to believe they would advise these men to work like the resident farmers" of the Peninsula, many of whom can be seen at 4 a.m., with their wives and families in gum boots, wading through mud 18 inches deep. But the Cape Saunders settlers must not get their shoes dirty. I mistake the temper of council members if they do not advise these people to appeal to their foster parents, the Communist Government, and they may enlist the sympathies of men like Mr Munro and -Dr M'Millan, who have figured so prominently in the movement for providing Communist assistance for their brothers in Spain.—l am, etc.. Another Resident.
