THE KUROW WATER SCHEME

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—The Vigilance Committee of Kurow, by its untiring efforts to effect useful improvements, has earned the highest esteem in the opinion of those residents who are civically-rninded. Kurow is situated in a region where the rainfall varies from 11 inches to 15 inches, so that throughout the summer and winter months there is usually a water famine. On one occasion I attended a meeting at Kurow and sat next to one of ; the local residents who rejoiced in the fact that rain was pattering on the roof of the hall, because he would be able to go home and enjoy a good bath, after a period of six weeks without a bath. He was a man who realised the benefits of a weekly bath; but, of course, there are people like our friend "Barrel" who have a bath only when a drenching rain soaks them to the hide. " Barrel," like Diogenes, who never washed, complains of the increase in rates; but he overlooks the fact that the ratepayers by sanctioning a loan will receive in return a valuable commodity called water. According to " Barrel," who is apparently blessed, or more possibljj cursed, with a virulent and malignant disease called men-' tal myopia, the ratepayers are going to shoulder the full burden of the interest charges; but the plain fact is that landlords can, and do, pass on the interest charges in increased rent which the householders are willing to pay The water scheme is a very sound proposition—a great, co-operative effort which, if carried, will meet with the approbation of all. succeeding generations. For years,. Sir, during the summer months, the residents in Kurow have lived in dread of the terrible and devastating grass fires which periodically sweep down the valley and threaten property and life. Apparently, the selfishness of " Barrel" holds mammon, alias filthy lucre, more sacred than human life and property. I trust, Sir, that consideration for others will prevail over selfishness and that the enlightened citizens of Kurow will remove the stigma by supporting the water scheme for all they are fit.— I am, etc..
