AMENITIES SOCIETY
IMPROVEMENTS AT ST. CLAIR PROPOSAL ADOPTED Excellent progress with the scheme for improving the children's playground and the area surrounding the bathing pavilion at St.Clair was reported to a meeting yesterday of the Dunedin Amenitieb Society. A plan, it was stated, had been prepared and the proposal wholly approved by the City Council, and the work was to begin almost immediately. The meeting was attended by Mr Crosby Morris (chairman), Mesdames Mackie Begg and H. L Cook, Messrs A. C. Cameron, H. P. West. John Wilson, J. M'George, R. Fountain, G. Simpson. D Tannock and J. Ash.
Mr Cameron reported that a subcommittee from the society had met the St. Clair Improvement Society and discussed proposals and then the plan in detail. At present there was just the bare building and no provision for children to play .n an enclosed area. Mr Cameron explained the plan and the terracing that would be necessary. It was estimated that the walling alone would cost from £SOO to £6OO, and the proposal was that the society should meet one-fifth of the cost up to a certain figure, the St. Clair Improvement Society two-fifths, and the City Council the balance. It was stated that the St. Clair Society had the necessary money in hand. The chairman congratulated the committee on its work. "If we get this major work carried out it will be a great help to the district and an acquisition to the city," he said. The plan was approved, and it was decided that certain details should be discussed with the city engineer. It was decided also that the society would find its share of the expense up to £l2O. A letter was received from the town clerk, advising that the societies' proposals had been accepted by the City Council, and that the work could be put in hand immediately the necessary preliminary arrangements were completed. It was understood that the two societies would find three-fifths of the cost of the work un to £6OO. Mr Cameron said he had been advised that the work had already been referred to the engineer and that no time would be wasted in making a start. It was decided to send a letter to Mr Arthur Salmond thanking him for the trouble he had taken in the prerjaration of the plan. The meeting discussed preliminaries to the annual meeting, which it was decided would be held on Monday, June 28.
