The start of the Maiden Race was considerably delayed by Jacynth, who eventually refused to line up, while Clavercourt also failed to get off. Tommy Atkins began best from Winitanga, Seacourt, and Shani, with Joe Louis, Defend, and Seattle at the head of the others, the field being well strung out. The leaders closed up in the straight, where Shani and Joe Louis drew out, Shani sticking on for a win by just short of a length. Three lengths away, Clectric pipped Winitanga for third on the post, with Tommy Atkins heading the bunch. The winner has been showing consistent form, and won handily. High Grader was favourite for the Hurdles. He was clear out in front for a mile, and then Unexpected and Kentucky Song moved up and passed him before the last fence. Once o/er Unexpected drew out for a decisive win. while Kentucky Song, being eased up, just scrambled home for second against Blue Tiger, with High Grader next. The winner was patiently handled by C. Thomson, and won well. Kentucky Song ran a good race, and Blue Tiger was finishing on, though lucky to get so close to Kentucky Song. High Grader needed the race, and should improve. Tail Light started a red-hot favourite for the gentlemen riders' race, and lying in behind the pacemaker, Bothwell, to the straight, then ran on for a decisive win. Pladie was well back all the way.

Manawatu beat the better-backed Riotous at the finish of the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, with Cotsfield very close up third, but they were lucky in these placings, as Wykemist would have won by a big margin had he not run off at the second last fence. Wykemist had run to the front from Cotsfield a little earlier, and was going strongly at the time, and with a stand up he must have won. His elimination left Cotsfield with a lead on Riotous and Manawatu, and to the last fence, where Cotsfield ran across Riotous and checked him. They were a tired lot of horses at the finish, Manawatu just sticking on a little better than the other pair. Dozie was a long way back fourth. Padnos and Mitzi fell.

Terry, the favourite, for the Winter Handicap, got a very bad run, and never had any chance, though she finished a very close fourth from well back. The race was won handily by Royal Feast, ably, ridden by B. H. Morris. He drew 7, but he came in two or three places, and was well away to occupy a handy position in behind the pacemaker, Golden Time Silent Acre, who got chopped out at the start, ran up quickly down the back, and was in behind the two leaders alongside Trailer. Royal Feast led Silent Acre and Trailer into the straight, and, after a struggle, Royal Feast hung on best, while Silent Acre weakened and was smothered in the last few strides by Trailer, with Terry coming up on the rails for a close fourth. Hamarin. Agog, and Lucullus Lad were next. Terry was several lengths away entering the straight, and must have won with a good passage. Joviality, favourite for the Hack Sprint, was up in the lead with Perfect Lady all the way, and actually led into line, but then faded out. Others handy early were Royal Minstrel, Paul Robeson, Helios, and Liane and Marsyas. When well in the straight Liane came solidly on the outer, and. finishing strongly, won decisively In a close finish for second Marsyas got up on the inner to beat Gladium, with Fossicker also finishing on from the back.

The bracketed pair, Passion Flower and Passion Fruit, paid the single dividend in the concluding event, for which they were solid favourites Hunter's Morn set a fast pace, and was clear at the straight, where he tired, and the bracketed pair took charge. They were hotly challenged by Gay Hunter, but he could not reach them, and Passion Flower finished over her mate. Blygain was fourth. Taro failed again in the heavy going.
