BALCLUTHA Surprise Catch The workmen engaged at the county drag-line on Tuesday were surprised when two large trout were found in one of the buckets. The trout were In good condition and weighed respectively lljlb and 111 b. Weather Vagaries The winter so far has been distinguished by an abnormal rainfall, and an almost entire absence of frosts. The result is that pastures are still green on the flats and growing, although they are not believed to possess the nutriment of spring and summer growth. Amateur Dramatic Society Balclutha Amateur Dramatic Society on Wednesday night, in the Britannia Theatre, presented five one-act plays to a very fair audience that filled three-parts of the hall. The first was '•The Man in the Bowler Hat," in which the characters "were well taken by Messrs A. Stewart, D. Sutherland, L. Guest, L. Bowcott, J. E. Mason, and Misses E. M'Laren and Marshall. Then followed " Riders' to the Sea," the characters "being taken by Misses T. Young, R. Simpson, I. Cruickshank, Mr A R. Dreaver, and Misses Washington and D. Muir, and Messrs L. Guest and L Bowcott. In/'Beauty for Sale" the artists were Misses H. Marshall. M. Sutherland, V. Marshall, L. Kleim. A. Bremner, and M. Lang. "Anoli the Blind" was portrayed by Miss I. Cruickshank, and Messrs Dreaver, Guest, and Bowcott. "World Without End" was the concluding play of the evening, the characters being taken by Misses Marshall, Bremner, M'Laren, I. Young, R. Simpson, M'Leod, and Mrs Moncur. The dialogue and acting were well done, reflecting credit on the instructor, Mr Worthington.
