STATE DEPENDENTS
ENORMOUS WAGES BILL An arresting table has been prepared by the Dominion, Wellington, showing the number of persons of various classes who are dependent on State employment and State county, together with the total cost It is impossible, of course (the Dominion says), to give all the details with anything like exactitude, but even on a conservative basis, taking official figures without making any allowance for casual employees, additional appointments since the latest available returns were published, and the new Marketing and Housing Departments the following list shows the colossal extent of depend ence on the State and the taxpayer for individual income:— Salaries, wages allowance* per annum.
