SHIPMENT OF POTATOES
CONSIGNED TO MONTEVIDEO OPENING OF NEW MARKET Opening a new branch of trade in Dominion primary produce, a shipment of 2000 bags of potatoes was despatched yesterday by the Shaw, Savill and Albion vessel Tairoa from Port Chalmers, consigned to Montevideo. The majority of the potatoes were grown in North Otago, but a proportion, of the total came from the Taieri. The fact that a larger supply was not available from the latter district was due to the wet season experienced and the attitude of the Department of Agriculture in refusing to allow any but the very best quality potatoes to be exported. With this in view, the whole of the consignment was carefully graded and sorted and was loaded on the ship under the supervision of the department. The Customs regulations of the two countries concerned required the careful attention of the consignors—a local produce firm—and each bag had to be despatched with " Grown in New Zealand " stamped on it, together with the Spanish equivalent of "Prime white potatoes."
