MISHAP TO TRAIN

STONES ON RAILWAY LINE PROMPT ACTION BY DRIVER (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 17. Stones on the railway line caused the derailment of the two leading wheels of the front bogie of a goods train engine near Taipuha station, eight miles north of Paparoa, at 3.40 p.m. today. More serious consequences might have occurred had not the driver of the train (Mr J. Bright, of Maungaturoto) noticed the stones when a short distance away and immediately attempted to stop the train. The impact could not be averted, however, but the train was pulled up within a further two chains without any other mishap. The police at Maungaturoto were subsequently informed of the accident and to-morrow, together with railway officials, they will carry out an investigation as to how the stones came to be on the line. It was stated that only two stones caused the derailment. The train was bound from Whangarei to Maungaturoto. About an hour was spent in jacking the wheels back on to the 'ine, the train crew being assisted by a surface gang which was working near Ky. This operation was completed shortly before 5 o'clock and the train proceeded south. The only other train to be affected by the accident was the south-bound mixed train, which was held up tor about 20 minutes.
