TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel Red Shadow Rod Shadow has been kept on the move and is reported to be building up in condition. Francis Lincoln Francis Lincoln has been , treated to another change of quarters iand is ;nbw in N. C. Price’s stable at New Brighton.' Todd Lonzla Todd Lortzia, who-has been absent for about 18 ,months, is again in work. He was foaled in'l927 and cannot be regarded ,a’s bid. a:-- ; J The- Man .6’ War gelding. Ghandi, who won at the Otautau meeting, put up three placed performances out of 10 starts this season. prior to scoring a win. De Soto Although De Soto has no immediate engagements it is reported that he is training on satisfactorily and gives good indications of standing another preparation. A Close Season The existing state of the going suggests that there should be a close season for pacers. The placed lot in one of the races at the Otautau meeting were stopping to a walk at the finish. '• Drumbunnil Drumbunnif, the winner of the Wallace Trot,, is a five-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from a Bellman mare. She had'unplaced performances prior to her win. Bellman was foaled in 1892, and a good stretch; of years exists between him and his granddaughter, who won on Saturday. Jack Potts There seems to be a misapprehension in the minds of many breeders as to the origin of the stallion Jack Potts’ nomenclature. Evidently (says an exchange) the majority of them are under the impression that the name is associated :with the seductive game known as draw pokep.; Such is not the' case. Jack Potts was bred on an Indiana stud farm, with which a Mr Jack Potts had an interest. As a result such names as those of Gamble, Full Hand, Ace Pdt, etc., are misapplied so far as their sire is concerned. Few sponsors of young trotting stock pay much attention to the all-important subject of appropriate nomenclature, which is a great pity, for it is always a pleasure to find some reference to a juvenile’s sire and dam included in its name. In this ' trotting breeders would do well .to follow the example set by such breeders of thoroughbreds as the Hon. J. D, Ormond, Sir George Clifford, and Mr G. G. Stead.
