STRUCK BY MOTOR CAR

YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 30. One young woman was killed, and another injured, when crossing Victoria road at Belmont, shortly before 8 o'clock on Saturday night. They were struck by a motor car proceeding towards Takapuna. A fracture of the base of the skull and head injuries resulted in the almost instantaneous death of Mrs Eva Elizabeth Hunt, aged 26, of Takapuna, while her companion. Miss Gabrielle Beattie, aged 20, of Mount Eden, suffered concussion, facial injuries and shock. The motor car, which was of the old touring type, was driven by John Albert Gibson, aged 20. a student. MANAWATU RIVER TRAGEDY DEATH FROM BROKEN NECK (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., May 30. A verdict that VI ior Arthur Johnston died from a broken neck was returned at the inquest to-day. On the night of May 17 the • deceased's car plunged into the Manawatu River in the Manawatu Gorge. The body was recovered on Saturday three miles and a-half from the scene of the tragedy. In the opinion of Dr Mules, of Woodville. the deceased's neck was broken before the car struck the river 150 feet below, Johnston, who was a commercial traveller, leaves a widow and a daughter of 11 years, who live in Wellington. FOUND DEAD IN HUT GOLDMINER'S FATE (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, May 30. Edgar Hastings Cambridge, aged 48, a goldminer, was found dead in his hut at Gladstone, early on Saturday evening. The deceased suffered from war disabilities and was subject to frequent heart attacks. He was a member of the Australian Royal Engineers, and was present at the landing on Gallipoli. He later joined the British Royal Flying Corps, and was discharged in 1920 with the rank of flight-captain. His brother is captain of the mission ship Southern Cross VII. Another brother resides at Omarama, and it is thought that his mother resides at Auckland. INJURY TO EYE William Chisholm, a young man living at Rockyside, Caversham, had his right eye injured by the branch of a tree yesterday, and was admitted to the Hospital at 8.30 p.m. A POTTS FRACTURE While playing second grade association football for Northern against Caversham at the Gardens on Saturday, William Smith, a young man who resides with his parents in Filleul street suffered a 'otts fracture of the left ankle. He was admitted to the Hospital at 4.25 p.m. MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED lan Coutts. a married man residing at Waikouaiti, was admitted to the Hospital at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday suffering from an injury to the left eye and facial abrasions, caused by a fall from his motor cycle.
