POLICE QUARTERS
INCREASED COMFORT FOR MEN PROVISION IN ESTIMATES MOVE BY COMMISSIONER (Per United Press association) WELLINGTON, May 30. The accommodation for single constables in Wellington, while not all that could be desired, appears to be more satisfactory than in other centres. One man who has had a fairly long period living in barracks said that the improvements recently carried out in the Wellington quarters had given the constables better accommodation than they had for many years Admittedly, there were only a few of the comforts of home life, but the men in Wellington were not doing badly, and did not have a great deal to complain about. " While conditions are not as good as I would like them, they are no worse than they have "en for years," said the Commissioner of Police (Mr D. J. Cummings), when asked to comment on the complaints. " Since I have taken charge of the department I have looked into the accommodation in all the centres, and ( have already arranged for money to be placed on the Estimates with a view to increasing the comfort of the single men at various centres and providing additional office accommodation. In some instances extensive building may be necessary.
"During the last 12 months." he added, "the Minister in Charge of the Police Department (Mr P. Fraser) has authorised a large sum of money for improving the various police stations throughout the Dominion and the residences attached to them, but there is still a great deal to be done, and the necessary funds must be provided by Parliament, which does not open for some months."
