STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
BRITISH TRAMP STEAMER COMPASS RENDERED USELESS MELBOURNE, May 28. (Received May 28, at 11 p.m.) Struck by lightning during a fierce storm off the coast, the British tramp steamer Appledore put into Portland, a Victorian outport to-day, for repairs. The Appledore was en route in ballast from England to Sydney. The ship's compasses were rendered useless. An expert compass adjuster has been sent from Melbourne to Portland.
