SHORT-SERVICE COMMISSIONS TWENTY-NINE APPOINTMENTS ONLY ONE FROM OTAGO (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. The candidates selected for appointment to short-service commissions in the Royal Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force were announced this evening by the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones. Applications for these appointments were invited at the end of March. Twenty-nine candidates have so far been appointed—four to short-ser-vice commissions in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, seven for training in New Zealand prior to appointment to short-service commissions in the Royal Air Force, and 18 for direct entry into the Royal Air Force.

"All the applicants who complied with the minimum requirements as to age and education were interviewed by the Selection Committee, and as a result 167 candidates were selected for medical examination," said Mr Jones. He explained that the final result of all the medical examinations was not yet available, but that it was now possible to announce that the following candidates had been selected for appointment to short-service commissions in the Royal New Zealand Air Force:— Dive, H. P. 8., Waitoa. Ward, D. H., Whangarei. Johnstone, A. N., Manurewa, Auckland.

Robertson, L. A., Auckland. These candidates will be required to report at the Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch, on June 8 for training. Those selected for training in New Zealand prior to appointment to short-service commissions in the Royal Air Force are as follows: — Carmichael, J. D., Christchurch. Hughes, S. W. R., Auckland. Newton, K. E., Okoroire. Bassett, T. G., Dargaville. Bromley, C. W., Christchurch. Reynolds, V. S., Lower Hutt. Fitzgerald, T. 8., Temuka.

The above candidates also will be required to present themselves at the Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch, on June 8. For direct entry into the Royal Air Force, the following candidates have been selected:—

Carlson, D., Auckland. Silk, T. N., Wanganui. Glenday, A. C, Christchurch. Gray, K. N., Wanganui. Johnstone, K. J. A., Auckland. Nelson, A. W., Wellington. Vare, K. F., Wellington. Shennan, P., Wellington. M'Carthy, R. W., Christchurch. . M'Comb, W. R., Auckland. Neill, J. R., Dunedin. Rea, K. N., Taranaki. Roberts, G. D. M., West Coast. Robertson, R. A., Taranaki. Trenchard, H. A., Wellington. Tuckwell, W. D., Wellington. Tallon, G. F., Canterbury. M'Clelland, N., Canterbury. Most of these, candidates will be required to leave New Zealand early in July, but they will each be advised by letter within the next few days. The appointment of an engineerofficer to a permanent commission in the Royal New Zealand Air Force has not yet been finally decided, but it is expected that an announcement concerning this will be made within the next few days.
