NOTES FROM AUCKLAND

(Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, May 27. Some interesting work was performed at Ellerslie to-day in spite of the fact that rain fell almost incessantly and the schooling of the jumpers was restricted as a result. The No. 1 grass, where the poles were out 10 leet, was available for galloping and the going was very heavy. The best efforts were those of Kilonsoa, Versant, Greek Gold, Shy and Lord Val, who gave a fine display of jumping on the grass. '

Versant, after running the first two in 28 2-ssec, completed six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec. Versant carried a good weight, and it is on the cards that he will show a return to form if he maintains his present rate of progress.

The best gallop was credited to Kilonsoa (Wiggins), who placed six furlongs behind in lmin 19sec. She ran the first three in 39 2-ssec, and went well throughout, although her rider was keeping her going at the end. Kilonsoa should be in fine trim when required to race. Captain Bruce (Gilchrist) shaded High Tea (Cameron) at the conclusion of half a mile in 55 4-ssec.

Royal Appellant (Buchanan) worked usefully over a round without being at top. He is carrying- a bright and muscular appearance and his condition suggests that he may show an early return to form.

Pango and Forest Glow were associated over a round in 2min 6sec. running the last six furlongs in lmin 28 3-sse"c and the last half mile in 59sec. They appear to have taken no harm from their racing at Te Rapa, where Forest Glow fell on the second day.

Surella (Wiggins) worked over a round in 41 3-ssec. The three-year-old is one of the most improved horses at Ellerslie, and is looking a picture. Monastic and Sky Pilot ran six furlongs in lmin 29sec and afterwards did useful pacing." Sky Pilot was unlucky at Te Rapa, where he fell over another horse on the second day. but his turn should come soon.

Greek Gold jumped off several seconds behind Pahu, but overtook him in the straight to complete half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Pahu took 55 3-ssec. Greek Gold's effort was one of the best of the morning, and although unplaced in his two races at Te Rapa, he should have prospects of earning some money at Ellerslie, as he appears to have benefited by his racing. Shy defeated Silver Sound over half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Shy is in good racing order, and Silver Sound looks improved. Kelly went evenly over six furlongs in lmin 31 4-ssec. He has not been overtaxed lately. Tooley Street was going easily alongside Backblock at the conclusion of six furlongs in lmin 22 2-ssec. Backblock set the pace over the first three furlongs, run in 40 3-ssec, and ran on solidly, although Tooley Street was too good for him at the finish. Horowhenua was finishing very strongly, just in front of Free Air. at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 42sec. They ran the first three in 43 3-ssec, and the last half mile in 58 2-ssec. Horowhenua has improved with recent racing, and Free Air is also thriving. Waitaka was better than Locknit over six furlongs in lmin 22 3-ssec. They ran the first three in 40sec, and Waitaka was going on solidly at the end. -Locknit is showing improved condition, but has not shown any particular liking for heavy ground. Knight of Australia (L. Dulieu) was a couple of lengths ahead of Valmint • Wiggins) at the completion of a round in lmin 59 3-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, and the last half mile in 55sec. Knight of Australia went in good stylo, and .Valmint, who

went wide round the turns, could not overtake him in the straight. All Irish (Fearn) encompassed a round in 2min 4 3-ssec. Black Marlin (Baker) went about a mile and a-quarter, covering the last round in 2min 10 l-ssec. the last halfmile in 58sec. Black Marlin appears to have come through his Te Rapa racing very satisfactorily. Lord Val (Beale) finished just in front of Gay Broney (Fergus), with Huntsman's Chorus close up, when they had finished a smart round over four hurdles in the middle. Lord Val has become a finished jumper. Gay Broney and Huntsman's Chorus, .who shaped very well for beginners, should have prospects in minor hurdle races.

Useful work on the sand was performed by Top Star, United. Collision, Don Erma, Black Thread, Small Boy, Armacourt, and Te Hai.
