REFORM OF THE LEAGUE
NO PROSPECT AT PRESENT THE DOMINIONS INFORMED LONDON, May 26. (Received May 27, at 1 a.m.) The political correspondent of the Associated Press understands that during the Imperial Conference discussions on the international situation Britain informed the dominions that the various countries' viewpoints were so divergent that there appears to be no hope at present of tackling reform of the League. This constitutes a reply chiefly to Mr Savage, whose enthusiasm for the collective system, which is generally regarded here as dead, has undoubtedly been stimulated by his contacts with the British Labour Party, which is endeavouring to bring pressure on the British Government through the Imperial Conference. The dominions has been informed that League reform is hopeless as long as the deadlock remains in connection with recognition of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia. Some of the major Pawers, including Britain and France, realising that Italy's conquest is a fait accompli, while confessing that recognition is distasteful, believe that they should cut their losses and recognise Abyssinia de jure now, because they see that the step will ultimately be inescapable.
