CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB

THE ANNUAL MEETING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. "The past year was a most successful one in every way, and the financial result exceeded expectations, as the balance sheet discloses." said the chairman of the committee. Mr A. S. Elworthy, in his address to members at the annual meeting of the Canterbury

.Tnckcy Club. "In anticipation of increased revenue," proceeded Mr Elworthy, " the stakes wee raised by the large amount of £5550. In spite of this, however, after providing for depreciation, a fairly large profit was made. This good result makes it possible for the committee to continue its policy of gradually increasing stakes until they reach their former high level The sum ol £3OOO has already been added to the forthcoming Grand National meeting and future classic events. lam confident that other programmes will also reflect the improved conditions. There is little in the balance sheet that requires special mention. The receipts from all sources of revenue were greater than last year, and there is everv reason to expect even better results in future. Owing to this successful vear it has been possible to reduce greatly the club liabilities. Our financial position is now very sound, and it i& a matter for congratulation, considering the difficulties that had to be faced during the depression. The year's attendances have beon much larger than for some year;-,, and the totalisator returns were up correspondingly. I am glad to say that this satisfactory position is nationwide. Some of the smaller clubs which have had so much difficulty in recent years are now making rapid strides towards full recovery Racing is becoming increasingly popular, causing many owners who have been in temporary retirement to start again in earnest. T think it is true to say that there are now more horses in training than ever before." As honorary treasurer, Mr George Gould said that this year the club had given approximately £30,000 in stakes, which was nearly 50 per cent, more than the sum required under the Rules of Racing. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and the officers for the year were elected as follows:—StewardsSir R. Heaton Rhodes, Sir Charles Clifford. Dr M. G. Louisson. Messrs M. Bethell, A. T. Donnelly, A. S. Elworthy. G. Fulton, G. R. Macdonald. H. A. Rhind, G. L. Rutherford, D. E. Wanklyn, D. W. Westenra; committee —Sir Charles Clifford, Dr M. G. Louisson. Messrs W. I. Clifford, A. T. Donnelly, A. S. Elworthy, G. Fulton. D. W. J. Gould, G. H. Grigg, G. R Macdonald, H. A. Rhind, G. L Rutherford, D. E. Wanklyn, and R. G. G. Westenra: honcrary treasurer. Mr G. Gould. On the motion of the chairman, Mr J. E. Henrys, the club's handicapper for 46 years, was unanimously elected an honorary life memb r of the club.
