WOMEN SHOPLIFTERS
SIXTEEN CHARGES PREFERRED FOUR MONTHS IN GAOL (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Fob. 8. “These offences exhibit a systematic course of robbery that the court cannot countenance in any circumstances,” said Mr E. C. Levvcy, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when sentencing two shoplifters to four months’ imprisonment. The accused were Elizabeth Sutherland, aged 48 years, and Mary Ann O’Neill, 46 years of age. both married women. O’Neil! was also charged with the theft of a fur coat, valued at £45, at Dunedin, (he property of some person unknown. On the application of Detective Sergeant Holmes she was remanded until February 15. “ The charges demonstrate that these women have boon shoplifting systematically,” said the detective sergeant. The two women had been caught stealing in the D.1.C., he continued. They had various goods in their bags, and had brown paper with them in which to wrap the tilings up. There were 16 charges of shoplifting, the value of the goods amounting to more than £33.
