CARRIAGE OF COAL
—— SHIPPING RATES INCREASED POSITION TO BE INVESTIGATED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 8. Following the decision of the shipping companies to increase their coastal xates for the carriage of coal, the Minister of Mines (Mr P. C. Webb) said to-day that he had deemed it advisable to refer the whole question of freight rales to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan) for investigation under the Industrial Efficiency Act. The Minister said that the increases ranged from 2s 6d a ton to 3s 6d a lon at different ports. “ I have as yet received no advice of any increase in the freight rates on imported coal," the Minister continued. “Local increases, therefore, will have an important bearing on, the economic use of New Zealand coals, particularly for gas making and steaming purposes, as compared with imported coals." Pending completion of an investigation under the Industrial Efficiency Act. Mr Webb said that the State Coal Mines Department, in common with private coal mining companies, would meet the additional charges, but would bo forced to pass them on to the consuming public, as it was quite impossible for the industry to carry the extra charges.
