GOOD PROGRESS MADE > SOME SECTION WINNERS FOUND (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. Play in the New Zealand championshin bowling tournament made good progress to-day. The first four rounds of section play in the Pairs were nlaved as had been planned, and some players got off .their fifth round games, thus completing their section play. In some of the sections the winners are apparent already. The fifth round will be completed this morning. Post-section play, will then proceed on the sudden death principle. Outright winners of sections, and those who tie with the winners of the sections, go on to the postsection plaj in the Pairs, and thus the players who. at the conclusion of the play in the fourth round to-night, had a lead of more than one win m a section were in an unassailable position unless another pair were level with them. Pairs in this position were those skipped by Gee and Naylor. . Dickinson, Hill, Jack, Higginbotham, Martella; Russell, Mitchell,, and Rodger are the winners of sections which have completed five rounds, and they will go on to the post-section play. In section Q 1 the pairs skipped by Avey and Ives have played five games, although the remainder of their section has not completed its fifth round. They have four wins each, and are certain to tie as the winners. Several ex-Pairs champions are among those who are in hopeless positions or appear in danger of not qualifying for the post-section play. Brackenridge had only one win, and M Walker had two wins in a section led by Rolls and Wells with four wins. The pair Scrimshaw and Edwards (Temuka) have had two wins .in section Dl, but there are two pairs in the lead with three wins each. Tamblyn is out of section G, having only two wins, while Raine leads the section with four. On the other hand Squire leads section HI level with Martin. Haworth is level with several others at the head of section K, and Bremner has got through the section play by tying with Hazelwood in winning section Rl. ~ The rain of the previous afternoon and night made the greens slow for the first games to-day. but bright sunshine and a warm breeze quickly improved them The wind freshened during the day to such a degree that it affected the run of the bowls on exposed greens, but towards the evening it abated, and the conditions became almost ideal for the last heads of the fourth round IMPROVED CONDITIONS WALKER BELOW FORM (Special to Dailv Times) WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. The third day opened in much better conditions. The sun and a breeze from the north had the effect of drying the various greens, and the big entrj of Doubles played two forenoon games instead of the one scheduled in the programme. On some of the outlying greens such as Central (Petone), Pm-irua. and Eastbourne five games were completed, and it is possible that several games of Singles will be played to-day.

Naylor (Thorndon) played very fine bowls. He is partnered by Springhall and gave a glimpse of his best form, arid the Rinks champion of 1933 will be hard to dispose of. H. Wilson the rinks winner of 1934, went well to-day losing only one game. His match with Brackenridge, who was his third on that occasion, attracted a good bank, and he played all over his opponent. Livingstone (Onehunga) lost two games to-day, while last year’s winner, Haworth, was rather unlucky to lose his first by a point. Gardiner and Grant gave a good exhibition at Hataitai to-day and should go still further. Dr Austin, of Cromwell, played solidly, and only one loss was recorded against him. M. Walker has only two games to his credit, and he is not showing his true form so far. He may give a better showing in the rinks. Bremner and Hardley also played their consistent game, and have had only one loss. The conditions were very tricky in the afternoon play, and the greens were much faster, but the wind was troublesome. They are expected to run faster and truer to-morrow with the early morning rolling. The weather now appears more settled
