WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Reports ol meetings ot branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly for the publication ot reports that are not supplied witnin a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised.

The Christmas party of the Temuka Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall. Visitors were present from kindred organisations in the iemuka district. The afternoon was spent in playing games and competitions, interspersed with pianoforte solos by Miss E. M'Leod. A Christmas cake, given by an anonymous donor, occupied pride of place at afternoon tea. Competitions resulted: Biscuits-Mrs V. Brookland 1 and 2, Mrs H. Walker 3; bed jacket (Mrs J. W. Tophams speciaD-Mrs A. S. M'lnnes 1, Mrs Walker 2, Mrs G. Hancox 3; bowl of toses-Mrs Topham 1, Mrs J.N. Taylor 2 Mrs J. Rooney 3, Mrs Brookland h'.c. A Christmas cake was won by Mrs Constable.

The presence of the Orari Readers, who contributed " Mr Pirn Passes By, evoked much interest at the December meeting of the Geraldine Women s Institute, the visitors being heartily thanked by the president (Mrs L. S. R. King). The competition winners were Mesdames R. Richards, D. M'Coll, H. V Firman, G. R. Knibb, and W. H. Mitchelmore. , _ * * #

Members of the Clydevale branch met in the hall on December 3. Miss May presided. The competition for the best bloom was won by Miss May and Mrs E. King first equal, and Miss Wilson and Mrs Jones second equal. The best Christmas gift, not costing more than 2s 6d. resulted in Mrs E. King being first, and Miss Wilson second. Hostesses were Mrs E. King and Miss M. Wilson.

The Taieri Mouth branch met for the last meeting of the year on Wednesday, when Mrs Sinclair presided. The roll call was "My most valued labour-saver." The competition—- " Home-made toys"—was won by Misses D. Marshall and E. Barber (equal), with Mrs R. Joseph third.

The Clutha branch held its final meeting for the year on Friday, Mrs Holgate presiding. Mrs Elliot (provincial president) and Miss Borne (secretary) were present. On being welcomed by the president, each was presented with a spray of roses. Mrs Elliot gave an address on the work of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Miss Borrie also spoke of her work, and both were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs &. Moffat was the winner of the cake competition. The hotesses were Mesdames W. Willocks and J. and A. Bell, and Miss J. Johnston.

* * * The Sawyers' Bay Institute met in the Public Hall, Mrs Begbie presiding, for a social afternoon. The motto was "With such power in your smile, sure a stone would beguile, so smile and smile for me." The roll call was An Irish joke or story." In a competition "Christmas present not costing rnore than 25," Mrs Hewitson was first, Mrs Petigrew second, and Mrs Lynn and Mrs Newsome third. Gifts of eggs, jam. and other articles were sent to the health camp and Boys' Brigade camp. A talk was given by Mrs Jackson Purdie on "Antiques and Porcelain." Mrs Begbie (president) and Mrs Munro (secretary) were presented with a bouquet of flowers, as this was the last meeting of the year.

The Papatowai Institute met on December 1, Mrs Tubman (president) in the chair. The motto was " It's true a rolling stone gathers no moss, but it gets rid of its rough corners, and takes on a lovely polish." It was decided to give a donation to the children's health csmp. The hostesses were Miss Zeta Latta and Mrs Jenks. On December 5 a successful sale of work was held in the school, members displaying needlework, produce, etc., and also giving visitors an idea how thrifty members can be. Competitions were Eopular, and Mrs Tubman was kept usy with ice cream.
