PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

Mrs A. E. Austin and Miss Austin, of South Canterbury, have enjoyed three months' sight-seeing in England. They plan to visit Scotland (reports our London correspondent, writing on November 14) and to spend Christmas in Ireland. Later they will return to Bournemouth to be within easy reach of London for the Coronation.

Mrs Walter Nash, wife of the Finance Minister, and Mrs W. J. Jordan, wife of the High Commissioner, were the guests of honour at a reception given by the New Zealand Women's Society at Grosvenor House on November 19. A particularly large number of New Zealanders was present to welcome Mrs Nash and Mrs Jordan to London. There were no speeches.

* * * Our London correspondent, writing on November 21, says that Mrs T. Brett, of Dunedin, has been visiting her cousin. Captain Donald Simson, at Surbiton, Surrey. After staying with friends in Wolverhampton, she will be back in Surbiton for Christmas, and afterwards go on to the Continent for a time before returning to London for the Coronation.

Mr and Mrs L. E. Rendall, of Timaru, and their two daughters will be returning to New Zealand by the Remuera, which is due at Wellington on January 16. During his stay in England (says our London correspondent, writing on November 14) Mr Rendall has been studying the latest horticultural methods and modern landscape gardening. He has also taken a prominent part in laying out the gardens at the London Film Productions' studios at Denham.

New Zealand's gift to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester was presented to their Royal Highnesses by Mr W. J. Jordan, High Commissioner, on the occasion of their first wedding anniversary, in the presence of Queen Mary, with whom the Duke and Duchess were staying at Marlborough House. The gift, a table made of New Zealand wood, ornamented with Maori carving, was much admired and appreciated by the Duke and Duchess, who asked Mr Jordan to convey their thanks to the Government and the people of New Zealand.
