RACING NEWS

By Sentinel Soon Spent The Paper Money—Week End three-year-old ally Soon Spent has failed to stand training, and will require a lengthy spell. A Smart Sprint Fiord and Wine Card put up a smart sprint at Riccarton on. Saturday by reeling off five furlongs in lmin 2sec. Cyclonic Cyclonic appears to be standing up to a fair amount of work, and galloped a good six furlongs on Saturday. He has been off the winning list for some time, but his class may land him a winner again. The Last The last of the Limonds will come under the hammer at the national sales, when six of his get are booked for sale. The list consists of four colts and two fillies, and they are sure to arouse a lot of attention. •'•; The National Sales

One hundred and thirty-three yearlings are. booked to go under the hammer at the natiortal.yearling sales. The number of stallions represented totals 30 and the number of .vendors 56. The figures in each case''make-a'record for the sales;-' .* . , A Lost Chance ''•'*■ : .' ; ;.■■"• '■■■■''^-.

The Clifden Racing Club has been granted permission to hold its annual race meeting on the Riverton racecourse and so fit in with the centenary celebrations. Last season the Clifden Club raced on the Invercargill course and made a profit. The Riverton Racing Club would have supplied itself with a good opportunity if the annual meeting, on one very special occasion, had been cut down and the third flay used for the centenary programme. The third day at Riverton is an anticlimax card, and would not have been missed on a particularly special occasion. .• ' • Holiday Plans

With a few exceptions, the plans of Riccarton trainers for the holiday racing have been arranged, and (says the Press) the list of horses and their destination is as fajlows:—Ellerslie, J. Shaw, Greek Gold; M. B. Edwards, PontyjF.D; Jones—Cerne. Abbas, Gustos, Royal Chief; C; M'Carthy, Argentic; F. Holmes. Studley Royal; H. Cutis— Trench Fight, Bun Fight, Impersonator; P. Mason—Lofty, Roaming, Merry March. Manawatu: A. Cutts—Paper Slipper, Top Notch, Lazybones, Thermidor, Day Dress; C. M'Carthy, Screamer; T. Lloyd—Tout le Mnride, Invoice, Private Bunsby. . Southern meetings: D. M'Grath. Convivial; H. Rousseau, Palmyra; C. Davey; Davolo, Rovolo; T. Oillett, Concertpitch, Culotte; S. Barr—Cape Gabo. Recollection, Redolent Vitaphone; J. Shaw, Yale; J. H. Watsoh, Rose of Tralee; Mrs J. :Campbell_Vintage, Knockfin, Tunneller, Willie Win, Orange Bud. In addition to this list. Joyous and La France may race at the Wairarapa. New. Year meeting and remain for the Wellington meeting later in the. month. There will be a fair contingent for the West Coast circuit, but the representation will not be as strong as in previous years. The Auckland Cup

Some great weight-carrying performances have been put Up in connection with the Auckland Cup, but they supply no reliable line as to what might happen at. the present time.; The longdistance races are run rather differently to what they were when champions of the past, such as Nelson, won under big weights,: but still he must have been a wonderful horse to establish his great record. Nelson won three*Auckland Cups.- He started with 78, and then won with 9.8 and 9.12. One of the most remarkable performances was put up by St. Hippo who, after •.winning ,the New. Zealand Gup, followed with the Auckland 1 Cup as a. 7 three-year-old with 8.9. Wamki won the Auckland Cup with 9.8. after finishing second to Canteen in the New Zealand .Cup when carrying 9.2. All Red won twice in consecutive years With 8.6 and 9.1, but since then winners with over nine stone are somewhat rare, Rapine won with *9.8 • m 1925, and he ranks as the only- winner with over nine, stone since All Red won in 1909. " Cuddle Won last year with 9.0, and reduced the time put up by Fast Passage 8.11 from 3min>23 4-ssec to 3min 23 l-ssec. .Minerva! 74 won in 3min.24sec, and ranks as next best from; a time point of view. Other winners in better than •; 3mm 25sec are Rapine 8.10, in 3min. 24 3-ssec, and Admiral Drake, ,7.8, in - Spun 24 3-ssec. Sasanof 9.6 ran second to Mascot 6.13 in 1918, and probably .one of the unluckiest horses ever saddled up for the race was Count Cavotir, who ran second in three consecutive years with 8.13 and twice with 0.5. Sasanof, Te Monoanui, and Count Cavour are the only horses to carry over nine stone into a place (apart from winners) since St. Hippo 9.9 ran second to Anita 6.9 in 1895. This, will convey an idea that the top weights have some difficulty in getting amongst the money.
