NEW OUTLET FOR WOOL
USE OF STAPLE FIBRE IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS LONDON, Nov. 22. The Australian Associated Press Association’s special Manchester correspondent reports important developments in the use of staple fibre, rayon being blended fifty-fifty with Australian wool spun on cotton machinery. This is an entirely new outlet for wool. While short Cape wools can be utilised, the main development appears to be in 64’s. 56’s and 48’s.
Australian tops are guillotined to the correct staple lengths for spinning. The yarns are used for dress goods and hosiery. In the latter case it is mainly interlock underweai with a warm, soft handle, which is expected to be most popular in the men’s trade. It is predicted that the fibre will make wool more attractive, more versatile and that the fringe of possibilities has hitherto been only touched. The impression is that staple fibre with wool for dress, hosiery, and furnishings will tend to reduce the consumption of cotton and increase the consumption of wool.
