WOOL PURCHASES
JAPANESE BUYERS BIG OPERATIONS IN NEW ZEALAND t Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Nov. 23. “ New Zealanders will welcome us. I suppose Japanese buyers will take about 100,000 bales this season,” stated Mr S. Mishima, wool buyer for the firm of N. Kanematsu (Australia), Ltd., who arrived from Sydney by the Maunganui on a holiday visit to the Dominion. Mr Mishima, who intends to visit the wool sales while he is in New Zealand, said that Japanese buyers wanted to purchase as much wool as possible here, but their demands would be governed by the market. They would not confine their buying to one class of wool, but would be in the market for a full range, from Lincoln to fine halfbred. The tariff dispute with Australia had resulted in Japan confining her purchases of wool this season to South Africa, New Zealand* and South America. Mr Mishima stated that there was little hope of Japanese buyers operating in Australia until next year. The firm that Mr Mishima represents is a branch of the parent company in Kobe which was established 48 years ago and pioneered the trade between Australia and Japan. Besides being among the largest importers of wool in Japan the company deals in general merchandise. It buys wool, sheepskins, tallow, casein and tin clippings from New Zealand and exports cotton and rayon goods.
