PORTOBELLO Personal Mr George Walters, who has been licensee of the Portobello Hotel for the past 10 years, has disposed of this business to Mr F. Ruck, of Dunedin, who took possession yesterday. Mr Walters has taken a keen interest in the affairs of the district, and will be much missed by the Regatta Club. Bowling Club, and other bodies of which he was an active member. Mr B. Anderson, who has been acting postmaster for the past three months, was met by several friends at Henderson’s Tea Rooms on Friday last, when he was presented with a small gift as a token of the esteem in which he has been held during his stay at Portobello. Mr Anderson will leave to take up duties at Dunedin, his place being filled by Miss J. W. Watson, who has been appointed as postmistress. Bowling Club

At a meeting of the Bowling Club Committee held on Monday of last week, a unanimous resolution was passed making Mr G. Walters the first life member of the club in appreciation of his services. A printed copy of this resolution was presented to Mr Walters by the president. BALCLUTHA A. and P, Society Entries Additional entries received bring the total for the jubilee show of the Clutha and Milton Agricultural and Pastoral Society, to be held on Balclutha Show Ground on Thursday and Friday of this week, up to 940. There are 33 entries for the competitions on the first day, and 33 for the second day. Angling Week-end anglers were disappointed at the small results, due to weather conditions. The largest basket obtained on local streams consisted of nine trout. The Molyneux was too high for successful fishing. MILTON Bowling ’ The following members of the Milton Ladies’ Bowling Club will visit Dunedin next Thursday to participate in “ Country Ladies’ Clubs’ Day— Mesdames Wilson, Walker, Davidson, M’Crorie, Cockerell, and Miss Gray. Fast Travelling An instance of travelling long distance within the minimum of time was accomplished on Sunday by Mrs R. G. O. Cowie, of Kumeroa (Woodville), in connection with the death of her mother, Mrs George Cooper, of Milton. Leaving her home early, Mrs Cowie motored 40 miles to Palmerston North, where she caught the airliner for Taieri aerodrome. After arrival at Taieri Mrs Cowie motored to the Main South road, where she connected with a south-bound service bus, and arrived in Milton about 2 p.m—having covered the journey from Palmerston North under six hours.

Milton Summer Show General entries In all stock classes and competitions at the Tokomairiro Farmers’ Club’s seventy-first annual Summer Show will be closed next Saturday evening. Post entries will be accepted in dairy produce and home industries. The following have accepted the committee’s invitation to officiate as judges at the show on Saturday, December s:—Cattle, Messrs W. Lee (Goodwood) and L, Colbourne (Kaitangata); junior Friesian judge. Mr E. Bryant (Otokia); draught horses, Messrs A. Carruthers (Ngapuna) and D, S. Brown (Dunedin); light horses, Mr F. J. Conn (Dunedin); sheep, Messrs D. Robertson (Waikoikoi) and A, S. Murray (Mosgiel); fat sheep and lambs, Mr E. Coleman (Balclutha); dogs, Mr W. Beattie (Manuka Creek); pigs, Mr G. S.
