LAWN TENNIS

M'MILLAN CUP TOURNEY JOHNSON AND MISS MANSON THE WINNERS Playing consistently Rood tennis throughout the various rounds. R. O. Johnson, the well-known field athlete and swimmer, and his 19-year-old partner, Miss J. Manson. won the M'Millan Cup for the 1936-37 season in the annual Mixed Doubles " Yankee " tournament conducted by the Otago Lawn Tennis Association at Logan Park on Saturday afternoon. Apart from a shower of rain early in the afternoon, the weather was fine and pleasant, and the tournament was greatly enjoyed by 162 players participating. The system of conducting the tournament was the same as last year. Six or seven pairs were allotted to each court in the A. B and C Grades, and the winners of each court played off to decide the section winners. In the A Grade Cooke and Miss Page played right up to form to defeat Johnston and Mrs Johnston in the final 30—27, both pairs being on level terms. The withdrawal in the semi-final of the back-markers, Bryan and Miss Pattison. robbed this section of considerable interest. The B Grade was won by a well-balanced pair in Flinders and Miss Hollow and Johnson and Miss Manson were the sucessful pair in the C Grade. These three pairs were then re-handicapped to play off for the cup. In the first match, Cooke and Miss Page proved too steady for Flinders and Miss Hollow and. after making up their handicap of 10 went on to win by 30 to 23. The final between Cooke and Miss Page and Johnson and Miss Manson was an even struggle, the St Kilda C Grade pair combining effectively to win by 30 points to 15 the losers not making up the leeway of 15 points conceded to their opponents. A high standard of play was witnessed, and the game was followed with considerable interest. The tournament was efficiently conducted by Mr E. D. Duthie. who. with the members of the Handicapping Committee, is to be congratulated on the excellence of the handicapping. The games were of great benefit to those taking part, and especially to the junior players, who should have gained valuable experience from the tournament.
