HOSPITALITY SCHEME

The North Otago Federation of Women’s Institutes has added a still further item to its numerous activities in adopting the South Canterbury hospitality scheme. To Mrs A. H. Gillingham. of the Fairlie Institute, belongs the honour of being the originator of this movement. At the Dominion Conference of Institutes held in Dunedin in July last this Fairlie Women’s Institute “ hospitality scheme ” was awarded the silver cup presented by Messrs G. and T. Young for the most outstanding achievement during the year. The scheme has for its guidance four principle “ aims ” —the bringing into closer contact of town and country members, and non-members, and all sections of the community, the encouraging of New Zealanders to see more of their own country, the providing of an added incentive for overseas visitors to come to New Zealand, and lastly, the promoting of national and international goodwill. In North Otago the movement has made a satisfactory beginning with Mrs C. J. Cowan. “ Haydowns,” Kia Ora, Oamaru. as honorary, hospitality officer. Already numerous oilers have come forward from institute members in various parts of the district to provide accommodation for guests, either members or non-members? These hostesses are privileged to be the promoters of a movement which, according to correspondence received, is likely to grow and have far-reach-ing beneficial results. It is expected that shortly every federation will be liiiked up and that guests and hostesses throughout New Zealand will have the opportunity of making use of the different hospitality circles throughout the country.
