A DEVASTATING FROST

HAWKE’S BAY FRUITGROWERS RELIEF MEASURES DISCUSSED (Per United Press Association) ' NAPIER, Oct. 16. , A .largely-attendfed meeting of fruitgrowers at Hastings to-night discussed the steps to be taken to alleviate the position as a result of the frost which ' devastated the Hawke’s Bay orchards on Thursday morning. It was decided that the executive of the Fruitgrowers’ Association, with co-opted members, should take immediate steps to formulate plans for submission to the Government so that relief could be afforded each individual grower, and so that proper means could be adopted to maintain the orchards. Over 300 growers were present, and it was apparent that all had been hard hit. One section favoured relief work as a means of raising funds, and others favoured sustenance while working their orchards. The position is undoubtedly the most serious in the history of fruitgrowing in Hawke’s Bay, and many growers are unable to carry on without assistance in some form or other.
