MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held at Milton yesterday, when there were present:— Crs W. J. Sheat (in. the chair), H. M. Driver, W. Moore, D. M'Gregor, A. King, J. Boylan, J. Allison, V. Wilson, B. Ussher, J. Clark, and A. Renton. CORRESPONDENCE Messrs Stewart and Kelly, solicitors, Balclutha, wrote asking the council to consent to the application of the Kaitangata Coal Company for a lease of that part of the public road adjoining the western boundary of section 16, block IX, Kaitangata district. — Granted. '■".,. Messrs Downie Stewart, Payne, and Forrester, Dunedin, wrote asking the council if it would be prepared to take title to the Taieri Mouth Cemetery lands at present in the name of the Otago Presbyterian Church Board of Property.—The matter . was held over until the next meeting. Mr C. J. Martin, Dunedin, applied for permission to erect a boat shed on the north side of the jetty at Lake Waihola.—The application was left in the hands of the engineer and the member for the riding with power to act. The acting secretary of the Otago Expansion League requested the council to consider the question of an annual grant to the league.—Received. Mr A. Stewart applied for permission to carry loads up to I class (6J tons gross) with a heavy traffic lorry on all roads in the county.—Granted. The assistant under-secretary of the Public Works Department (Mr C. E. Bennet) advised that under section 135 of the Public Works Act, 1928, the Governor-General could issue a warrant authorising the Minister of Public Works to construct a bridge and declaring that a portion of the cost should be paid by the local authority of any district which would receive benefit from the construction of the bridge. It was intended to adopt this procedure for the buijding of the Clydevale bridge.—lt was decided to concur with the proposal. The Director-general of the Health Stamp Campaign wrote asking the council if it would purchase health stamps.—lt was decided to purchase the same number of stamps as last year. Mr W. J. Wright applied, for permission to lay a half-inch pipe across the road to connect with the main pipe leading to Mr R. Flett's property.—Mr Flett' also applied for permission to lay a one-inch pipe.—The inspector's action in granting permission was approved. Mr M. J. Heffernan (Berwick) wrote complaining of the bad state of the road opposite Mr Graham's property, and requesting the council to take steps to improve it.—The engineer was instructed to report on the matter to the next meeting. Messrs Reid, Rutherford, and Sumpter, solicitors, wrote requesting the council to pass the necessary resolution to exempt the land leased by the trustee of the estate of John Andrew Strain to the New Snowdrift Lime Company from the provisions of sub-section 1 of section 125, Public Works Act, 1928.—The necessary resolution was carried. . FINANCE The clerk reported that the receipts since the last meeting amounted to £1457 12s, and the debit balance to date to £3700 17s 7d. Accounts amounting to £2683 2s 7d were passed for payment. RANGER'S REPORT The county ranger (Mr J. H. Morgan) reported that he had found 17 head of cattle wandering on the roads during last month.—Adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT The engineer (Mr J. H. Bateman) reported as follows on the work done in the county during the month:— Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—-Surface work has been done on Sunflower road and also at Awamangu and Morris road. Maintenance gravel has been spread on the following roads: — Smith's track at Cunningham's, 14 yards; Smollet's, 184 yards; Taylor's, 46 yards; Pukepito, 24 yards; North Balclutha, 22J yards. ; Crichton Riding.—Metal has been spread on Remote and Duthie's roads. A blocked 15in culvert at Currie's Creek has been lifted, cleaned, and relaid. Matau Riding.—Benhar road has been graded and 302 J yards of gravel spread on Benhar high road and 27J yards on Harvey's road. The high sides have been removed from the road through Stirling township. Inch Clutha Riding.—A 6in culvert has been laid across Lawson's road and the water table is being cleaned out. Centre road has been graded and 65 yards of gravel spread between the bridge and Millar's. A slip on the river bank at Weir's has been made up with spoil from the water tables and planted with willows. Kaitangata Riding.—Slips have been cleared away at the CUffs' and potholes patched to Gunther's road. Glenledi Riding.—A gate has been erected at the foot of Cooper's Hill on the old road. TVaihola Riding.—Metal has been spread on Beacon street, Waihola Township, and slips cleared on the Gully road. Formation work on the road to Mud Flat has been carried out with labour under No. 5 bcheme. Mount Stuart Riding.—A culvert has been cleaned out and slips removed on Clark's road, Lovell's Flat. Tokomairiro Riding.—Maintenance metal has been spread on the following roads: —Tokoiti to Milburn, Tokoiti Township, Martin's Back road, Waronui. Table Hill, Michell's and Peattie's road. Surfacing has been done on Bush Quarry road. GENERAL ACCOUNT A set of piles has been washed out at Taieri Mouth jetty. The approximate cost of making a motor and stock, bridge at Hanley's ford is £4OO. The following votes appear on the Public Works Estimates for 1936-37 period:—Blackburn to Mount Stuart (£ for £), £SO; Cairn road to Newton (£ for £), £75; Chrystal's Beach road (free), £200; Gray's road (free), £500; Lakeside to Stirling (£IOO, £2 for £1), £300; M'Corkindale's road <£ for £), £SO: Milburn to Circle Hill (£ for £), £SO; Milburn to Fort Hill (£ for £). £SO; Ridley's road (free), £150; Sunflower road (£ for £), £l5O. MAIN HIGHWAYS Dunedin to Invercargill (Milton to Balclutha). —This section has been graded each week. Balclutha to Lawrence.—This highway has been graded and 690 yards of gravel spread. High shoulders have been removed on portion of the road through Balmoral No. 1 Riding. Balclutha to Wangaloa—The Bal-clutha-Kaitangata section has been graded twice, 12J yards of gravel spread, and a six-inch culvert put in near the quarry. Kaitangata to Paretai Punt—This highway has been graded, and a sixinch culvert put in at Morrison's. Stony Creek to Hillend —This highway has been graded, and 84 yards of gravel spread near Bishop's. Clarksville to Springvale—This section has had the usual grading, maintenance gravel has been spread, and surface work done on portion. Green Island to Taieri Mouth.—Surface work has been done on this highway. , PJ The report was adopted, and it was decided to authorise the ranger to make collections from the Taieri Mouth fishermen toward the upkeep of the jetty.

GENERAL It.was decided to write congratulatin" Mr T. M. Ball on his appointment to the position of inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department, Wellington, and to thank him for his services to the county during the time he was district engineer. Cr M'Gregor stated that some time ago he had been forced to cut down 20 blue gum trees on the boundary of his property because it was stated they were a danger to power lines. He had not received any compensation, although he understood that the local body was liable, and compensation had to be fixed before any trees were cut down. In order to clarify the position and to bring it under the notice of any ratepayers who might be similarly situated, he moved, that a remit be sent to the next meeting of the Counties Association asking, that a clear definition be given on the.issue.—Carried.
