BALCLUTHA Swimming Club The annual meeting on Monday night of the Balclutha Swimming Club was well attended. A satisfactory financial j position was disclosed by the balance sheet. Office-bearers were elected as follows:—President, Mr Hewland; vicepresidents—Messrs D. Mulvey, J. Cameron, Ken. Evans; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Dawson; club captain, Mr Kirkpatrick; vice-captain, Mr R. Poynter; committee—Mr Mulvey, Miss Cameron, Messrs D. Mulvey and Rogers. It was stated that arrangements were being made for a visit from the Australian swimming: team shortly. It was suggested that some time in December might be a suitable date for Balclutha, and it was agseed' to hold a carnival to mark the occasion. It was decided to open the baths'on October 31. Mr Ken. Evans was appointed coach and swimming instructor, and it was decided to advertise for a caretaker.'.: . • Air Pageant An air pageant is to be held on Saturday at Tuapeka Mouth in a large paddock belonging to Mr J. Cross,; which it is proposed to register as an' air field. Airmen are expected to attend from Dunedin, Invercargill, and Balclutha. The idea is to bring 'flying nearer to the young, men in the country districts, many of whom are anxious to qualify as pilots, but lack the funds to go to the large centres and learn to fly. With a registered landing ground at Tuapeka Mouth, it is anticipated that there will be quite a number of recruits. The field's dimensions are 500 yards by 600 yards. ~ MILTON Personal On the eve of Mr N. C. Marriott's' departure for Dunedin to take tip a new appointment, Mr and Mrs Marriott were waited upon by several members of the Milton Municipal Brass Band and presented, with a hand-painted silver-mounted' double-tier cake stand. The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr J. S. Varcoe) presiding over the following councillors:—J. L. Wylie, R. Duff.W. Foley, J. Gosden, F. Lischner and L. A. Kirk. The secretary/' of the All Saints* Ladies* Guild advised that a bazaar would be held in the Town Hall, and asked that the guild be given the same consideration as in previous years.— Granted the use of the hall at the same fee as last year.' , G. P. Cuttriss' wrote asking for the use of the Town Hall, free of charge, for the holding "of a tug-of-war and wrestling tournament, the proceeds to be in aid of the M'Pherson Benefit Fund (Roxburgh).—The use of the hall was granted at half-price. Mrs M. Arnold, secretary of the Tapanui branch of the W.D.F.U. wrote asking if the council could not provide some facilities for boiling the copper at functions held in the Town Hall, or place a caretaker in charge. She pointed out that at the union's recent birthday party some person had Eut salt in the water prior to the tea eing made.—Received. The acting-secretary of the Otago Expansion League, Dunedin, wrote asking if the council would favourably consider the question of an annual grant being made to the league to assist it in its work of promoting the welfare of the province.—Received. The Tuapeka County engineer forwarded particulars of the tenders called for formation work in Kent street, and stating that the council had approved of J. A. Chandler's tender of £BS 2s 6d.—The Borough Council's liability under the contract amounts to £2O 17s 6d.—The tender of J. A. Chandler was approved. It was decided to purchase £1 worth of the new issue of health stamps. The Cemetery Committee was asked to submit to the next meeting of the council a report on the removal of some 29 trees on the west boundary at the cemetery and the erection off new fence. The balance sheet of the borough returned by the Government auditor was approved. Accounts amounting to £ 1275 19s 2c were passed for payment.
