ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
ACCOUNTANT FOUND DEAD (Per United Press Association) STRATFORD, October 5. William Power, a prominent Stratford accountant, was found dead in his office this morning by his daughter Marie, a .303 rifle between his knees. The deceased had left home at 8.30 in the morning. His daughter arrived at the office, where she was employed, at the usual time, and, going irto Power's room to open the window, found his body. He was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and- had served on Gallipoli and been wounded and invalided home. He was also secretary of the local War Funds Council, and until recently secretary of the Stratford Racing Club. He had been in ill-health for some time past. He leaves a widow and three children. FOUND DEAD IN BED (Per United Association 1 PALMERSTON N., Oct. 5. The police have received advice that Thomas Aitken, aged 84, was found dead in bed yesterday at the residence of his sister-in-law, Mrs Smith, of Tiraumea, near Eketahuna. The deceased recently came from Dunedin. WOMAN'S SUDDEN DEATH (Per United Press Association) OTAKI, Oct. 5. Mrs Catherine Neilson, wife of Mr Andrew Neilson, died at Waikanae on Saturday night. She was sitting in a car and suddenly collapsed. YOUNG ATHLETE'S DEATH {' ■ - '' (Per United Press Association) •WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. On the eve of his eighteenth birthday, David H. Tolan, a printer, died in hospital from injuries received in the Kaiwarra Gorge last Thursday, when a motor cycle he was. riding collided with a bus. Tolan was an all-round athlete with a distinguished record in cricket, football, lawn tennis, hockey, swim- ■ ming'and badminton. ENGINEER DROWNED IN RIVER (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Oct. 5. Hugh Henry Hambleton, aged 56, an engineer, with a wife and three children, was drowned in the Grey River this morning. An attempt at rescue by a seaman failed. Hamble- * ton had been ill for the past four months. HAND BADLY LACERATED While engaged with a circular saw at the Otago Chair Company's factory yesterday afterndon. Frank Hodge, aged 17. residing at 8 Clyde street, caught his hand in the machine and received severe lacerations. He was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital at half-past 4.
