AVERTING A STRIKE
TROUBLE AT AMERICAN PORTS UNION CONTRACTS EXPIRING WASHINGTON, Sept. 30. (Received Oct. 1 at 10 p.m.) The Maritime Commission nleaded to-day with owners and unions to avert the threatened tie-up of Pacific Coast shipping, affecting 37,000 men. The union contracts will expire early to-morrow. The commission sent a telegram to Mr Bridges (San Francisco) as the key man, asking him to accept a 60-day extension of the present, agreement. In the meantime a New York strike resulting from a row within the union prevented the sailing of the liner President Roosevelt. A TRUCE ASSURED
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at 0.30 a.m.) Later information stated that a 15day truce was virtually assured in the dispute between the shipowners and the longshoremen.
