NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL

(Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 1. Local trainers with horses engaged at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting are experiencing an exasperating time with their charges, as the long spell of almost continuous wet weather has kept their training headquarters a veritable quagmire, and the use of the course proper for fast work is out of the question. The Dunedin Cup winner Tauraraai, who will be renewing his acouaintance with Wingatui patrons when he lines out for the Mosgiel Handicap, has been working well on the Riverton tracks with his stablemate Ashaway. Tauramai is to be ridden by the ex-Inver-cargill horseman. C. T. Wilsor in his forthcoming engagements. No horse on the Invercargill tracks has been working better than the Spring Hurdles candidate Golden Lap. Trainer W. E. Hazlett has kept his charge up to the collar with plenty of long work and ai. occasional school over a couple of flights of hurdles, and the Woodend galloper has thrived on this work. Another candidate from the Hazlett stable which is due to make his debut as a racer at the D.J.C. meeting is Baltruin, by Balboa from Glentruin’s daughter. This racy looking maiden is getting through a lot of useful work on the local tracks and shows the determination of all Balboas when stretched out over a bit of ground. T. E. Pankhurst’s candidate, Horn’s Reef has been in work for about five weeks, but will need some racing to bring him to his best. This galloper does not appear to have quite recovered from the leg trouble which necessitated a spell towards the close of last season, and is usually exercised on the tracks wearing a bandage. Double Shot, who wrenched a fetlock a few days prior to the Otago Hunt meeting, is again an active member of R. E. M'Lellan’s lengthy string, and is getting through serviceable tasks on the tracks. As he was well forward prior to that temporary enforced let-up, he should be in good condition for engagements at the D.J.C. meeting next week. F. W. Ellis’s Guineas candidate Silver Choir will not make the trip to Wingatui as ho has been suffering from a slight attack of shin soreness, and has been treated to a light blister. This Aus-tralian-bred novice is the aristocrat of the racers trained at Invercargill, and it is indeed unfortunate for his party that he should go wrong just when he looked like making good. The latest addition to F. Voight’s team is Johnny, who is to be prepared for high-weight races by the young Invercargill mentor. A novice recruit to the hurdling sport is the Riverton-trained Bay Biddy. Rather a disappointment on the flat, Bay Biddy displays particular aptitude for the leaping game.
