TECHNICAL SCHOOL

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD

The monthly meeting of the board of the Dunedin Technical School was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by Messrs J. ,J. Marlow (chairman), J. T. Paul, F. L. Lawrence, L. Sanderson, H. H. Johnson, C. J. Hayward, W. D. Sutherland, Dr Gardner, Mrs W. Herbert, and Miss L. Sullivan. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN Mr Marlow was re-elected chairman of the board and Mr Sanderson vice-chairman. The chairman, speaking of the death of Mr L. A. Walker, said he was sure it had come as a severe blow to every member. Mr Walker had not been with them very long, but while he had been a member he had been a painstaking, conscientious, and capable member. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Walker, members standing in silence. The chairman welcomed Mr Sutherland to the meeting. ELECTION RESULTS The chairman stated that the following members of the board had been re-elected:—Mrs Herbert, Mr C. J. Hayward, Miss L. Sullivan, Mr H. H. Johnson, Mr F. L. Lawrence. GENERAL A copy of a circular was received from the Education Department concerning grants for the conveyance and the board of pupils attending day classes.—The principal gave details of the grants to be made. Tram fares would not be paid, but the cost of travelling by buses and ferry boats, etc., would be provided for bn a certain basis. A copy of a report on technical educational systems in other countries was received from the Education Department, Victoria, Mr Aldridge remarking that it was the finest report on technical education ever produced. Mr Sanderson was appointed to represent the school on the Vocational Guidance Association. Mr Hynes submitted a report on the business transacted at the engineering conference held in Auckland during the August vacation. The report stated that he looked on the conference as marking a milestone in progress in engineering training. It was a matter of satisfaction that the idea of such a conference had been first suggested by their school. RESIGNATIONS The resignation of Mr J. Sheppard as a representative of the school from the Otago Education Board was accepted. A letter was received from Mr W. W. Batchelor resigning from the school owing to the calls on his time. The principal stated ’ that Mr Sutherland had been appointed by the Education Board to take Mr Sheppard’s place, and that steps would have to be taken to fill the vacancies caused by the death of Mr Walker and the resignation of Mr Batchelor within 30 days. COMMITTEE REPORTS

The Finance and Works Committees’ reports were adopted. The chairman said that the new typing duplicator to be purchased would make for efficiency and economy. With regard to the matter of the new domestic wing, that would come up at next meting, when they received a report from Mr Hynes. SCHOOL BADGE A sample of a school badge and hat band for the girl scholars was submitted by the principal and approved. THE CORRECT TITLE The principal gave an interesting statement regarding the correct title of the school. He said that it should be the “Dunedin Technical School,” and that they had the “ Dunedin Technical High School branch ” for full time pupils. They were no more a college than a primary school. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) reported as follows for the month of September;— The school re-opened for the third term on Monday, September 14. Friday, September 25, was our annual Hospital Day. Boys and girls brought flowers, which were arranged in bunches at school and delivered by the pupils to the Public Hospital, the Children’s Convalescent Home, Batchelor Hospital, Talboys Home, Montecillo and St. Helens Hospitals, as well as to 35 private homes. CONFERENCE The board was represented by the chairman and myself at the conference of Technical School Boards held in Wellington on September 22, 23, and part of 24, I was able to spend a whole day at the Christchurch School of Art, another day in inspecting new developments at the Wellington Technical College, and some hours at the Education Department. I shall be ready to present special reports to Buildings and Appointments Committee during the month of October

TRADE COMMITTEE The Electing Committee of Employers has asked the board to appoint at least one advisory committee from those trades in subjects allied to which the board holds evening classes. The report was adopted, the request from the Electing Committee of Employers being held over.
