WAIKOUAITI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr Andrew Fell), Crs W, H. Brown, A. Jenkins, W. R. M’Dougall, A. Y. Park, and R. M. Templeton. The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, forwarded a draft copy of the traffic regulations, 1936, and stated that any comments or suggestions which the council might submit would receive careful attention.—After discussion, the clerk was instructed to notify the commissioner that the new regulations had received the full approval of the council. The Director-general, Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, wrote asking the assistance of the council in the health stamp campaign for the purpose of raising funds for children’s health camps.—The council decided to assist in the raising of funds, and in the meantime the clerk was authorised to purchase health stamps to the value of £2.

The secretary, Otago Expansion League, wrote asking the council to consider the matter of contributing an annual grant to the league funds to assist in the promotion of the welfare of the province.—Received.' The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote giving particulars of the speed limits of heavy motor vehicles which had been gazetted and were now in force.—Receiyed. Advice was received from the Treasury, Wellington, that a subsidy amounting to £94 10s 6d on general rates collected for the year 1935-36 had been remitted to the credit of the council’s account at the Bank of New Zealand.—The clerk stated that it was the largest ever received from the Government by way of subsidy on rates since the incorporation of the borough. It was decided to erect a notice board at the lower end of Beach street to prevent motorists from attempting to get to the beach through the loose sand, as better access was available near Matanaka Head.

The Mayor was authorised to make inquiries as to the possibility of procuring a better quality of gravel for street maintenance higher up theWaikouaiti River.

An application for permission to install a septic tank at a residence in the course of erection near the Main road was granted. Accounts amounting to £157 8s 5d were passed for payment.
