TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

Trained at Oamaru : ; • Norma Bingen is now in J. HenderT son's stable at Oamaru. '; A Genuine Pacer Southern Smile is a genuine pacer, and in her present form she should not be long in adding to her winning record. .':..;■'....

The Veterans Harold Logan and Vesuvius are the veterans among the .pacers at Addington this week, the age of each being 13. New Metford is 12. Not Likely to Improve - ; Gay Gordon is now a 12-year-okl, and is past the stage where much improvement can be expected./ : ; , At Addington B. Jarden has arrived ...at A'ddingloil. He has. purchased a property iiv Harrington street, and will .train. Donalda and Red Glow at headquarters. John Jinks John Jinks Is.now being trained, by :P. Gallagher. John Jinks is a.'.brilliant pacer, but became unreliable at the barrier. It is only a'question of his learning to begin promptly to win: a race or two. A Promising Novice Musketeer, who is to have his first race. in. the First Maiden Handicap at the Cambridge meeting this, week, lis ;a> ! three-year-old gelding by Jewel Pointer, from Harvest Home, and is thus a full-brother to Great Jewel. Musketeer has been showing outstanding promise in his training efforts at Epsom, a feature of his work being the fine way he has battled on when under pressure. Although he may not win at * Cambridge, the novice is sure to derive .a.good deal of benefit from the outing, and .he can confidently; be ticked off as ah early winner in the hew season. Number Cloths • The Metropolitan Trotting Club still adheres to the antiquated leather saddle' cloth numbered in order to distinguish the horses. They have been in use for some time and appear to be a bit the worse.for wear, so that they do not fulfil the purpose of adoption. The numbers are easy enough to read when a horse is going slow, but not so .when racing in a field. It has to be remembered that the principal meetings at Addington are patronised .by people from', all parts of' New Zealand and .hence well worn numbers do not help them to distinguish the various horses in a field. Another objection to them is the fact that they have to be tightly girthed under' the saddle and require too much trouble to displace them after; a'race.' This would not be so noticeable'if a much more popular and easily detachable numbering had not been adopted at other meetings.-.. A Fair Weather Sport The:'result of some of the-form displayed on the first day;at Addington •proved conclusively that light-harness racing is essentially a fair weather •sport. Horses that held a royal chance in public opinion, and were backed accordingly, failed to''shape up to expectations because they eould not act on the bad going, Possibly some of them may.have been short of Work, and this would very probably be held to apply to the majority of the horses that appeared during the day, but then, again, some of .them pulled up fairly well after, a race. Blair Athol was ,one .-wellTbacked chance that went under, after looking a winner until inside the final furlong, when Golden Mist measured him off. . Golden Mist is trained at Oamaru, where the recent weather conditions were more favourable for training than in Canterbury. '" Blair Athol > should be' improved by his race. De Soto was one good favourite that justified the confidence .imposed in "him, and 'he won really - well at the finish. ' He may have won under any conditions, as he really had the finish to himself. Frisco Lady had a bad run .Ir* the Trial Handicap, and was distressed after the race. There is not much of her, as she has not developed a great deal, and remains a light-framed filly. Flotsam and Discord were two well-backed horses for the Stewards' Handicap that failed. Flotsam failed to stay on, but the going no doubt adversely affected his chance as well as that of Discord. The strong support accorded both horses suggests that they may do better later at the meeting. Bonny Azure was a well-backed chance that outclassed the opposition in the Queen Mary Handicap. There is not much to say about the Selwyn Handicap and the International Handicap, because both races were run in a very bad light, which completely obscured the fields as they raced for most of a circuit. The horses could be distinguished with difficulty even when running in the straight, and racing under such conditions is really beyond comment. Speedy, but Unreliable The Australian-bred pacer* Star Pronto is getting through his tasks at Epsom in a satisfactory manner, and the black gelding has taken no 111<effects from the two hard races he had at Auckland in June. When he won the June Handicap on the second day Star Pronto was responsible for a truly wonderful performance. In all probability Star Pronto will be taken to Cambridge this week to compete in the Militia Handicap, in which he figures off, 24yds bhd. The son of Don Pronto would have prospects second to none if he could be relied upon to leave the mark properly, but there is always a doubt about him, and his chances may depend upon his ability to begin correctly.
