PROSPECTS FOR OPENING DAY PONTY FANCIED IN WINTER CUP DIAMOND FAVOURED FGRSTEEPLES

CHRISTCHURCH, August. 10. , The "Grand National meeting bears every prospect, of opening, under very favourable circumstances. After a fairly good frost, over-night, this morning at Riccarton became quite sunny and summer-like, A good deal of work .took place, mostly on.the sand track, which, provided good going, and the grass track is quite sound but, devoid of sting. The course proper iS firm without being fast, and We steeplechase course leaves nothing to be desired. The racing will take place on going that should suit any hoise. The card will open -with the Trial Hurdles, for which. The Smuggler may start favourite. .He is in good shape, and next td him, Battleground and Saltspray are likely to find favour The Paparua Handicap is, regarded as a fairly open race, and contains some smart gallopere. Knotkfln ■is one of the best handicapped horses in the .race. She looks well, but still shows reTi.rtanee to begin work.
