Mrs F. Stables is paying a visit to Wellington.

Mrs Geoffrey Rich has returned to Cave from a visit to Miss Hunter-Wes-ton.

Mr Paine is to be the speaker at the monthly meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Otago Women's Club tins afternoon. His subject will be " Rich Gardens."

At a meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women Mrs Benson presided over a large gathering and welcomed Mrs Blanford, repesenting the Dunedin Housewives Union. Progress reports were received rom the various sub-committees of the •ouncil, and a number of new remits rom the council's branches and affiliated societies were onsidered in detail in view of the approaching conference of the Dominion Executive.

At the August meeting of leith bran'ch of the Home Economics Association the members had the pleasure of a visit from Miss Calder. president of the association. A box on 'Tailoring" was found to contain nuch useful information. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mrs We».r; vice-president, Mrs Hands; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Vallance; and committee—Mesdames Davis and Henderson and Miss Henderson.

On Saturday afternoon Mrs H. C. Campbell entertained a few musical friends at her home in High street in honour of Miss Elvira Wycherley, who leaves shortly to visit her parents before her approaching marriage. Besides the hostess, Miss Wycherley and Miss Sheila Campbell, the following guests were present:—The Misses Little, Mrs R. T. Little. Mrs M'Arthur. Mrs Raynor Bell, and Misses Ida White, Beatrice and Irene Barth, Meda and Bessie Paine, Lilian and Elsie Rattigan, Ada Sinclair, Mary Frazer, Mary Martin, Katie Gillies, Ethel Wallace, Ngaio Garland, Nancy Hobson, Mania Service, and Helen Stavely. The pleasant afternoon was brought to a close by the opening .of some dainty gifts by Miss Wycherley.

Mrs G. J. Cooper, of Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, delegate to the Dominion Women's Institute Conference for the Taumere Women's Institute, left by the express on Saturday, and is paying visits in Wellington, Palmerston North, and Auckland en route home. She is accompanied by Mrs Lemon, also a Taumere Institute member. Whilst in Dunedin Mrs Cooper was the guest of the Rev. W. A. Hamblett and Mrs Hamblett, of St. Matthews Vicarage. She later stayed with ha mother, Mrs F. G. Pond, of Janefield, Mosgiel, and visited many friends. One day some North Island Institute members were taken over the Mosgiel Woollen Mills, and were greatly interested. On another day an afternoon was given to enable Mrs Cooper to meet the Janefield Women's Institute members, and a happy time was spent.

The Dunedin Badminton Club held a successful Sealed Handicap Tournament on Saturday evening. There were 60 entries, the winners being Miss Marion Crow W. L. Goldsmith. The sixth annual meeting ?f the St. Clair branch of the League of Mothers was held on Thursday, Mrs G. F. Booth presiding, The election Of officebearers resulted:—President, Mrs G. F Booth; vice-presidents, Mesdames Dolg and W. Anderson; hon. secretary, Mrs P. H. Jones; treasurer, Mrs W. Rutherford; committee Mesdames Calvert, Davis, Robson, Turnbull, Miller Prichard, and Warwick; tea convener, Mrs Davidson. Mrs Booth presented Mrs F. Stuckey with a bouquet of spring flowers to mark the members' appreciation of her services as accompanist. After the business had been concluded Mrs Routledge read an interesting paper on "Kitchens" describing old-fashioned, roomy kitchens, more in the nature of a family living room, and contrasting these with the present-day type—efficient and laboursaving. Two' appropriate elocutionary items were rendered by Miss Pat Strachan.

Recent guests at Onslow House included Miss Barbara George, Auckland; Mr V. Goddard, 'Wellington; Miss Coreen Ogsten and Mr and Mrs Gerald W. Lane, Dunedin.

The younger members of the Austral Girton Club are to provide the entertainment on Saturday evening, when the club holds a meeting in the Vedic. The nature of the programme is being kept a secret, but promises to be very pleasing.

A fortnightly euchre and dance was held in the Pine Hill School on Thursday. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs Lillie, of Invercargill, and Mr W. Braden, of Pine Hill. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mirs A. Doudlc and partner, and a Monte Carlo by Mrs G. Reid and partner.

The August meeting of the Musselburgh Rise Home Economics Group was held at the Sunshine Hall, Mrs Harris presiding. The competition for the month was "A spray of flowers from one's own garden." Mrs Harris introduced Mrs Orr Campbell, who gave a practical demonstration on " Rosetree pruning," also demonstrating how to strike the new shoots of chrysanthemum and iris bulbs, and the proper handling of young seedlings. Mrs Downing thanked Mrs Orr Campbell for her interesting and practical even- # * #

Mrs* J. Hossack left with her husband by Saturday morning's express, en route to her home in Scotland. Over 100 people, apart altogether from the boys whom Mr Hossack had taught at the Otago Bovs' High School, assembled at the Railway Station to bid them farewell and wish them bon voyage. Mrs Hossack has expressed herself in a letter since as being greatly touched by the kindness of the people in Dunedin and by the sincerity of regret expressed at her husband's and her own departure.

The Dunedin Business and Professional Women's Club, at its meeting in the Tudor Hall last evening, was fortunate in having as its speaker Miss M. E. Joachim, who gave a spirited account of shopping in the East. Miss Joachim described experiences in Colombo, Athens, Iraq, Damascus, Bagdad, Malta, Brittany, Portugal, and Crete, and not only presented a memorable picture of the East, with all its clamour, colour, crowds, and beauty, but also gave her listeners an amount of very useful information to stand them in stead when they should travel themselves. She was warmly thanked by the president, and by Miss Timlin, who, on behalf of the other club members, proposed a vote of thanks to her. Miss Joachim later answered questions.

>;i :i? % Yesterday afternoon an "at home" was given by the Otago Women's Club in honour of Madame La Meri and her associates. Lady Ferguson received the guests and welcomed them to the club. She said that she hoped they would have a successful tour and enjoy their visit to Dunedin. Mr A. D. M. Longden then introduced to the large number of members present Messrs Guido Carreras, Mario Salerno, and Tom Challen, and Misses Laura Mollica (Mrs Salerno), and Joan Howley. Mr Carreras thanked the club members for their hospitality and spoke about the courtesy he and his wife had experienced in New Zealand. Mr Salerno also spoke, his speech being delivered in Italian. Lady Ferguson then invited the members to go round and meet Madame La Meri, who was an attractive figure in a suit of deep green with black relief and a black Cossack hat. The famous dancer proved to be a delightful guest and made a charming impression on the assembly. Tea was then served in the dining room around a table adorned with bowls of prunus blossom.

Mrs J. D. Charlton Edgar was hostess at a morning tea party on Saturday at the Savoy, given in honour of Miss Lexia Macarthur prior to her carriage. The other guests were Mesdames Mark. Hanan and Philip Braham and Misses R. Nicolson, E. Brickell, A. M'Arthur, May Haggitt, and A. and L. Priest. In the afternoon Miss Ann M'Arthur gave a pantry party at the Savoy, her guests on this occasion being Mesdames M'Arthur, J. Macarthur, Robertson, Kevin Dun, Boddy. and Rich, and Misses Hanlon, Jones, Priest (3), Nicolson, Runnerstrum, and Flora Macarthur. The party was held in the lounge at a specially decorated tea table. Last evening Miss Edna Jones and Miss Rona Nicolson were joint hostesses at a bridge party given for Miss Macarthur at Mrs E. Nicolson's house. The guests were Mesdames Charlton Edgar, Oliver Cox, Mark Hanan, Dunning, Aitken, and Colin Nicolson, and Misses Flora Macarthur, King, Brickell, Priest (2), Cameron, and Haggitt.

The eighth annual meeting of the Port Chalmers League of Mothers was held on Tuesday evening, with the president, Mrs Cleghorn, in the chair. After six years of service as president Mrs Cleghorn expressed her wish to be relieved of this position, the members granting her wish very reluctantly. Following is the executive elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs J. Thomson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Walker and Scolly; secretary, Mrs Sutherland; treasurer, Mrs Inness; magazine secretary. Mrs Telfer. jun.; committee—Mesdames Neilson, M'Clelland. Neill. J. Johnston. Thorn, Agnew, Peak, M'Elwee, Jenkins and Harold Watson; pianist and choir mistress, Mrs Mirams. During the evening the choir acted a charade, and a ghost story was told by Mrs Thomson. Two competitions were won by Mrs Gardiner and Mrs Johnston respectively. A birthday cake, a gift from Mrs Cleghorn. was presented. The candles were lit by the patroness, Mrs John Watson, and blown out by the Mayoress, Mrs Scolly, after which the cake was cut and handed round, thus bringing to a close a pleasant evening.
