COASTAL SHIPPING

UNFAIR COMPETITION ALLEGED PLEA FOR STATE PROTECTION (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 29. “ Through unfair and uneconomiccompetition coastal shipping to-day is in a perilous position,” said Mr Eruesi Davis, chairman of directors of the Northern Steamship Company, Ltd., at the annual meeting this afternoon. “It is our hope that the Government will accord some measure of protection to this industry, which equally with other services has played a part in the development of our country,” and provides a livelihood for many thousands of workers.” Mr Davis suggested to the Government that it should consider subsidising coastal shipping for the carrying of fertilisers at a low rate, in the same way as it subsidised the railways.
