TRANSPORT LICENSING
SITTING OF No. 9 AUTHORITY A sitting of the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority was held in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Messrs A. T. W. Wood (chairman), J. Preston and W. Blackic presiding. TRANSFERS GRANTED. The application for the transfer of a goods service licence extending from Cromwell to Tarras, Bannockburn and Bendigo, from William Bell (Cromwell) to James Percy Bell (Cromwell), was granted. The transfer of a passenger service licence (Tahakopa—Balclutha) from Galbraith Bros, to South Road Services (Balclutha) was granted. GOODS SERVICE LICENCES. John Hector Soper (Mr P. S. Anderson) applied for a goods service licence operating over a 12-mile radius from the Lawrence Railway Station. An objection to the application was put forward by Mr C. J. L. White, on behalf of the Clutha Carrying Company.—Evidence in support of the application was given by Messrs A. C. Leary, R. S. Thompson, H. Winter and D. Cummings, who had been appointed at a special meeting of the Lawrence branch of the Farmers' Union to point out to the Licensing Authority the necessity for the service operated by Soper.—For the objectors Mr White said that only one small corner of the area applied for was under dispute, that being the district round Kononi and Greenfield, from which the Clutha Carrying Company derived a considerable amount of business.—Evidence in support of the objection was given by Donald Sinclair Andrews, manager of the Clutha Carrying Company. —The application wa6 granted. James Fraser (Mr J. P. Ward) was granted a continuous goods service licence over the whole \ of the South Island, for the purpose of road construction and maintenance work under Government and local body contract, the licence to embody a three-vehicle authority.
