EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was held yesterday, and was attended by Messrs James Wallace (chairman), J. Sheppard, E. Morgan, D. T. Fleming, G. Livingstone, R. H. Todd, N. Colquhoun, D. C. Cameron, and P. M'Kinlay. WELCOME TO NEW INSPECTOR. The chairman welcomed Mr G. E. Overton, the newly-appointed senior inspector, to the meeting. Mr Wallace said that Mr Overton was an old Otago boy and was coming back to his home town. Mr Overton briefly returned thanks. GENERAL APPLICATIONS.

In connection with the request of the head teacher of the Ranfurly School for repaperiug in his residence, the architect reported that although not damaged in any way the papers in the hall and dining room had faded. To repaper and touch up the woodwork would cost about £7. The renovation of the front bedroom could be held over.—lt was decided to carry out the necessary work.

The architect reported that the renovations and improvements at the residence of the Shag Point School master would cost about £29 10s. A hot water system would cost £32 10s, towards which there would be Government assistance. —It was decided to carry out the renovations, etc., and to apply to the department for a grant for a hot water system. It was also decided to obtain a list of residences of Grade 3 schools which have no hot water systems. The teacher at the Weston School applied for an extension of the drain and repairs to asphalt paths at the residence. The architect reported that the drainage work was necessary at a cost of about £l2. The path would require to be renewed.—The work to be carried out. The Glenomaru teacher applied for renovating of the living room. The architect estimated the cost at £4 10s. He had not inspected the place, which had been last renovated in 1928.—The work to be done. It was decided to carry out interior renovation at the Oturehua teacher's residence at an estimated cost of about £7. Interior renovation of the teachers residence at the Hooper's Inlet School was also agreed to at an estimated cost of £l3. The St. Clair committee asked for attention to the floor of the gymnasium and the repairing of asphalt. The architect reported that some of the piles were gone and, subject to an under-floor inspection, might be estimated to cost £l2 to reinstate. To repair and patch the asphalt would cost £7 (subsidy matter). —it was agreed to expend the £l2 and to ask the committee what it was prepared to contribute to the other work. The Kakapuaka committee applied for new outhouses. The architect reported that there was no record when these were erected, but it would probably be somewhere about the eighties. If new outhouses were necessary they would cost in concrete and galvanised Iron about £3o.—Referred to the architect with power to act. It was decided to carry out interior renovation at the residence of the NorthEast Valley School master at an estimated cost of £33 ss, the chairman stating that he had given permission for the work to be done. The teacher at the Kyeburn School renewed his request for a pun porch to act as an additional bedroom. He pointed out that the two bedrooms in the house were very small, one being 9ft 6in by 9ft 6in and the other Oft 6in by 9ft 9in. The architect estimated the cost at £34.—The work to be carried out. A request was received from the teacher at Tuapeka West School for assistance in conveying the pupils to Lawrence for swimming instruction. The estimated cost of 12 trips was £2 5s. — It was decided to grant £2. Mr Robson wrote asking for a conveyance service from the Barnego district to the Balclutha School. There were seven children of school age, but two were not eligible for capitation. — The secretary (Mr J. W. Carrington) said that he had written to Mr Robson on the subject, and it was decided to hold over the matter until a repty was received from him. SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS. The board decided that April 27 should be the date of the biennial election of school committees. ADDITIONS AT OMAKAU. The department intimated that it had made a grant for the erection of two additional rooms at the Omakau School. Work to be done by the board's staff. FURNITURE FOR SCHOOLS. The department, in reply to the board's inquiry regarding additional furniture for five-year-olds, stated that it was of opinion that the board should do the best it could with any surplus furniture that was available, this being the practice adopted by boards generally. The letter was received. MORNINGTON SCHOOL. The Mornington committee applied for repairs to the destructor and water channel. The architect reported that tlie destructor was built of brick and was .in a state of collapse beyond repair. A new destructor would cost about £l6, and this was a subsidy matter. The extension of the storm Avater channel and a email concrete wall along the boundary of the entrance was necessary, at a cost of about £7. It was agreed to carry out the work. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The Waikouaiti Committee applied for school ground improvements. The architect reported that the grounds were in an unfinished state caused by the removal of the old building and'the erection of tbe new. The suggestion was to form a rock garden on the bank behind the school, which would help to hold the bank together and also beautify the approach. The committee would provide 10 yards of stone andJ>some soil if the board would provide tho labour, estimated at about £lO or £l2.

It was decided to carry out the irnprovements, Mr Green, agricultural instructor, to be consulted on the matter. The Waikouaiti Committee also asked that part of the front fence and gates bo renovated. The architect reported that to erect a new fence of cyclone netting with top and bottom rail, and provide new gates, would cost about £32.

It was decided to approve of the renovating work and to hold the other matter over.
