PALMERSTON B.orough Council The ordinary meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held on Monday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway), and Grs Riddle. Pastier, Ross, Morrison, Thomas, Hodgetts, Hopkins, and Earley, Mr Galloway welcomed the new town clerk, treasurer, and inspector, Mr T. Fogarty, Oamaru, to the borough. Mr Fogarty thanked the council for the welcome extended to him. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Sir Francis Dillon Bell, and the council stood in silence ns a mark of respect. Mr F. C. Pagel applied for a reduction in rates on his house, which had been unoccupied for over 12 months. —The application was granted, providing it was valid. The Waihemo county clerk advised that the County Council had suggested that an extra crossing be put in above the present one, for the convenience of motorists.—lt was left to the Works Committee to decide the matter, with power to act. Mr T. Colling applied for an entrance to be fbrmed into his property in Gilligan street, section part 13, block 33.—The request was granted under the usual conditions. Mr William Hooper, secretary of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Cromwell, advised that the account for forms recently rendered was not on record in the church books, and that the balance sheet did not disclose the liability.—The matter was held over until a report was received from Cr M’Gregor. The Domain Board applied for trees, a fence, and gate chain to be put on the local domain. —The council granted the request, and agreed to accept liability for the cost. The secretary of the Palmerston Hockey Club asked for permission to. use the recreation grounds for play during the coming season.—lt was decided to hold a conference with local .sports bodies, to reach a satisfactory agreement for all. The secretary of the Palmerston branch of the Plunket Society applied for a contribution from the council towards the society’s funds. —A donation of £3 was granted. The Otago Hospital Board invited representatives of the Borough Council to be present at the official opening of the new administration block of the Dunedin Hospital on March 23. —The Deputy Mayor (Mr W. Earley), Cr Thomas, and Cr Hodgettg were nominated to attend. , The report of the traffic inspector (Mr P. Laughton) for the period, January 21 to February 22, 1936, was read and received. . - It was decided to retain the light at the top of the road near Mr J. Philip s property. The Works Committee s report was received. A comprehensive report was made by the Reserves Committee, and it was decided to send out numerous notifications. Accounts amounting to £125 13a lid were passed for payment. The town clerk was authorised to advise ratepayers who were in arrears that their accounts must bo paid immediately. It -was decided that the wages of the borough employees be paid fortnightly. It was resolved to write to Mr Ball, asking him if the council is allowed to mark the roads down the centre, for the benefit of motorists.

Grain Yield An excellent return was received from Mr Spillane, senior’s, crop of Gartbn oats, which, when threshed recently, yielded 100 bushels to the acre.

Gore Golf Club The following office-bearers were elected at. the annual meeting of the Gore Golf Club on Monday evening:—President, Mr H. H. Doughty; vice-president. Mr J. A. S. Aitken; secretary, Mr L. J. Crosbie; treasurer, Mr R. I. Rutherford; club captain, Mr L. G. Thomson; committee — Messrs A. J. Hawke, R. Fisher, R. Ritchie, S. B. Taylor, and J. Hunter; auditor. Mr E. Sutherland. Personal Mr R. J. Telfcr was accorded a farewell by the staff of the Gore Post Office prior to his departure for Invercargill. The acting-postmaster, Mr A. S. Powley, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Telfer with a fountain pen. Mr Telfer was also entertained by the members of the Celtic Cricket Club, on behalf of whom Mr W. Southern made a presentation of a cigarette case. Gore High School i At Monday’s meeting of the Gore High School Board a letter was received from the acting-Director of Education advising that the Unemployment Board was prepared to consider subsidising the cost of erecting an assembly hall at the school on the understanding that the work would be commenced by March 31. The rates of the subsidy would be determined upon a receipt of a formal application. It was decided to call tenders for the work as soon as possible. WAIMATE High School Shooting The winner of the junior Godley Cup wa s decided on the final day of the Waimate High School Cadets three days’ barracks. Cadet J. Moir secured first place with 84 points, giving him a margin of four points over the runner-up. Cadet Sole. The competition for the senior trophy has now reached an interesting stage. Cadet J. Leach heads the list with 77 points—ls for deliberate, 15 for snap, and 43 for rapid —but Sergeant-major W. O’Sullivan, who has still to fire the 50 yards rapid, has a good chance of winning the cup. O’Sullivan scored 20 in both deliberate and snap shooting, but Leach’s score of 43 is a very fine oue for rapid firing. Major M. A. Stedmnii, of the Eew Zealand Staff Corps, who inspected the company, expressed pleasure at the smart turnout of the cadets. He was particularly pleased at the manner in which the n.c.o.’s carried on their work without the assistance of the officers. Captain Sattcrlhwaitc, area officer, also commented favourably on the smartness of the company. Personal The following appointments to the teaching staff were made by the Waimate High School Board—B grade assistant, Mr F. R- G. Aitken (of the school staff): science master. Mr A. H. Partridge (of the Hastings High School); C grade assistant. Mr H. W. King (of the Gore High School). good qualities and courtesy and assistance given to the police officers at all times. Mr F. Stoop (clerk of the court) supported the presentation, and other speakers all joined in expressions of good wishes for Mr and Mrs Kent’s future happiness and success. Mr Kent suitably acknowledged the gifts and thanked those present for the kindly thought which prompted their action.
